Colorado Valley Telephone Cooperative, Inc. recently awarded scholarships to twelve graduating seniors from six area high schools.

Feed The Need Feed the Need, a non-profit organization based in Bastrop whose mission is to feed people physically and spiritually, will provide free burgers every Monday at 6:30 p.m. in La Grange at 901 Mode Lane.

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office reported three tornado sightings in the southern part of the County during the storm that passed through the area Tuesday evening, May 18. Strong winds toppled trees and power lines and damaged some light buildings.

Schulenburg High School will holds its graduation ceremonies May 28 at 7 p.m. at the football field.

Gary Don Nietsche, General Manager at Fayette Electric Cooperative, reported that crews and contractor crews responded to outages from the storms that moved through the Cooperative’s service territory Tuesday evening. Rain, lightning and high winds primarily impacted members in Fayette, Colorado and Lavaca counties. Damage from a tornado observed near Swiss Alp between Schulenburg and La Grange on Highway 77 snapped two power poles just north of FM 956 and Hwy 77. Another pole snapped near Berger Road between Hwy 77 and Ammannsville as a result of the tornado.

Storm-related problems Tuesday in La Grange were a result of too much water coming down too fast. Flooded homes, a washed out railroad track and a pair of water rescues ensued in the city limits.

La Grange High School held its annual scholarship presentation for graduating seniors on Tuesday May 18. The La Grange Independent School District’s board of trustees met Monday, May 17. The meeting began with a comment from the public on agenda items. Mr. Derrick Edson addressed the board about his concerns of requiring the students at LGISD to wear a mask in the classroom.

Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Wednesday, May 12 the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Canine Unit, Sgt. Randy Thumann and K-9 partner Kolt, stopped a Ford F-350 on Interstate 10 at the 667 milemarker at approximately 12:35 p.m. for a traffic violation.

On Tuesday, May 11 around 2 a.m. Deputy Seth Nagel stopped a Ford pick-up for an expired registration on Hwy. 71 near Kirtley Road. The report said an odor of marijuana was present and after a probable cause search of the vehicle, the driver was found to be in possession of marijuana, THC wax and several firearms. The driver was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and unlawful carry. The driver, 29-year-old Traveon Devondre Barnett from Houston, was arrested and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.
