Woman Gets 30 Years for Brenham Area Robberies

• A Round Rock woman accused of robbing convenience stores at gunpoint in Brenham and Chappell Hill has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. 34-year-old Aparis Unique Higgs was sentenced on Aug. 12 on two counts of robbery, both second degree felonies. Higgs was sentenced for her role in a pair of robberies that occurred a month apart last spring, one at the Brenham Food Stop 2 on March 21, 2020 and the other at the Sunoco store in Chappell Hill on April 21, 2020. Higgs, along with 20-year-old Ricky Caldwell, also of Round Rock, led authorities on a high-speed chase after the Chappell Hill robbery, ending with their arrest in Lee County. Caldwell has not yet been sentenced. Higgs will also have to pay $572 in restitution. Higgs is also wanted in Ohio and Pennsylvania for failure to appear, and in Michigan for fraud. Caldwell is wanted in Georgia on a failure to appear warrant, with previous arrests in Georgia and Florida.
• A Brenham man is charged with the death of a Brenham woman after a weekend shooting. Shortly after midnight on Aug. 8, Brenham police received a report of shots fired in the 2300 block of Becker Dr. When officers arrived, they found 44-year-old Cynthia Lynette Jackson non-responsive with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Jackson died at the scene from her injuries. 30-yearold Jason Andrew Saxton was subsequently arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and taken to the Washington County Jail for holding.
• An escapee from the Leon County Jail was taken into custody on the morning of Aug. 12 in Brenham. 36-year-old Kevin Kahler was arrested after the Brenham Police Department’s Crime Reduction Unit received a tip around 10 a.m. from the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force that he was possibly in the city. At 11:30 a.m., Kahler was taken into custody without incident at the Knights Inn hotel on a warrant for his escape from the jail, where he was being held for burglary of a building. He was left in the custody of the task force for transport, and is back in the Leon County Jail. Kahler had been on the run for nearly a week after the Leon County Sheriff’s Office said he escaped on Aug. 6 while part of a work detail with another escapee, 33-year-old Kevin Webb. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the two stole a Leon County Precinct 2 truck and drove to Conroe, where authorities say another vehicle was stolen.

• A broken spill gate on the Gonzales Dam has resulted in Lake Gonzales draining down 12 feet at the dam, preventing people from launching boats into the lake on one side of the dam and into the Guadalupe River on the other side and fresh-water mussels found in the lake have died. According to the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA), the spill gates were lowered after recent heavy rains in order to maintain river flows. One of the spill gates, once lowered would not return to the closed position. GBRA hydroelectric and engineering teams are waiting until the water clears to allow visibility to further inspection of the non-responsive gate. The lake was created by the construction of the dam.
