Woman Awoken by Deputies As Fire Threatens Her Home

A fire on Camp Lone Star Road burned a pair of structures and threatened a residence Saturday morning, Oct. 30.

Firefighters from La Grange, Ellinger and Schulenburg battled the fire for several hours before sunrise.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reported that the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 2 a.m. The caller didn’t know the exact location but a glow from the fire could be seen for miles.

La Grange Volunteer Fire Department responded along with deputies A.J. Gonzales, James Ulbig and Terry Guentert. The deputies located the fire on property about halfway down Camp Lone Star Rd. from US 77.

La Grange firefighters discovered two structures fully engulfed with the flames threatening a nearby residence. La Grange Fire Chief Frank Menefee said a woman was asleep inside the home, unaware of the fire outside. Deputies made forced entry into the residence and evacuated the female homeowner.

The Ellinger and Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Departments were called for assistance. Fayette County EMS also responded with an ambulance. There were no injuries, however.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control and left the scene around 8:30 a.m.

Menefee said the fire started from a brush fire that was set and left unattended the previous afternoon. That fire spread and ignited the structures, he said.
