Winter Weather Causing Rolling Blackouts

The winter storm passing through Texas is causing power outages and rolling blackouts statewide, including here in Fayette County. Craig Moreau, Chief of Emergency Management for Fayette County, asked everyone to stay off the roadways and check on neighbors, especially the elderly.

"We need to check on our older folks," Moreau told the Record on Monday morning, Feb. 15. "Frequently call them or if you can, go by and check on them, see if they are OK and if they need anything. The power outages is our main worry for folks who depend on electricity for heat."

Moreau said some of the power outages are due to downed lines. Others, he said, are due to rolling blackouts. He said the state electrical grid does not have enough supply to meet the demand. 

"There's not enough power to go around," Moreau said Monday morning. "The blackouts will continue until there is enough power, and there is no ETA on that right now."

Several inches of snow blanketed the County Monday morning. Schools and many other businesses were already closed due to President's Day. The H-E-B store and Walmart in La Grange were both closed Monday morning, along with many other convenience stores around town.

Among the unusual sights around the area on Monday, Buckner's Creek was beginning to ice over at the bridge on Country Club drive. 

"Check on your neighbors, call them, or go over and knock on the door, especially the older folks who may be without electricity," Moreau said.
