Winchester Civic Association Sets Annual Domino Tournament
The date for the annual domino tournament held by the Winchester Area Civic Association has been set for Sunday, Feb. 20 beginning at 1 p.m., at the St. Michael’s Park Pavilion in Winchester. A meal will be available prior to the beginning of the tournament. Straight and 42 will be played. A silent auction is planned and will be BYOB. Proceeds benefit local charities and scholarships.
Winchester 4-H Shrimp Boil
The Winchester 4-H will be holding the 3rd Annual Shrimp Boil on Feb. 5 6 p.m., at the St. Michael’s Park pavilion in Winchester. Tickets are $30 a piece and all proceeds will benefit the Winchester Youth Livestock Project. Raffle tickets for five chances to win will be available for $20 per ticket with only 700 sold. You can contact any Winchester 4-H member for tickets and more information.
Winchester Book Club
The Winchester Round Table Book Club will meet on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at Zilss Hall. Two books will be discussed, “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah and “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck.
Both books deal with the Dust Bowl and the exodus by many to California from the Midwest.
Quilt Block Classes
Classes are held at Zilss Hall, 8945 FM 153, Winchester, TX 78945. The cost of the class is $75. All supplies are provided for you to finish a 2’x2’ block. Design templates are available. Please dress appropriately for painting. We have plenty of room for social distancing. Classes are scheduled for Feb. 12 and Feb. 26. You may register and pay for your class on the website www.quiltblocktrail.com.
Barn Board Quilt Trail
Drive out to Winchester, pick up a map at Murphy’s or Zilss Hall and enjoy viewing the 65 quilt blocks displayed in our area. The trail is self-drive, available at your convenience, and is a great way to spend an afternoon viewing quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road. Winchester Barn Board Quilt Trail maps can be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange.
Recycling Trailer
The Winchester recycling trailer is located on the side of Zilss Hall on Memorial Hall Street. Please place your recycling in the appropriate bins. We would appreciate that you make sure that you close the bins so that any trash will remain in the bins and not blow.
Zilss Community Hall
Anyone wishing to rent Zilss Hall should contact (512) 434-0292. The hall is following COVID-19 requirements. Rent is very reasonable.
The Little Free Library
The library is always open and has a variety of authors. Space is limited, so please, if you donate a book(s), look through the current selection and take as many as you leave. The Little Free Library is housed under the roof of the patio at Zilss Hall. There is also a bulletin board available on the patio. If you have an event, you would like to advertise, please post.

St. Michael’s Lutheran Church
The weekly worship service takes place at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning in the sanctuary. Following the worship service, you may gather in the Education Building for Bible Study and Sunday School beginning at 10:15 a.m. You are welcome to visit for Worship and Bible Study. When you come to the church, introduce yourself to Pastor Nate, he will be thrilled to meet you.
