Winchester BBQ Showdown this Weekend
The 9th Annual BBQ Showdown will be held at Shorty’s Bar in Winchester, Texas on September 24 and 25 and will benefit Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area and the Family Crisis Center. Meat categories will be chicken, pork spareribs (no baby backs), and beef brisket. Jackpot categories will be the open (provided by event coordinators), beans, and bloody marys.
The entry fees will be $150 for meats and $20 for each jackpot. There will be cash payments paid out in all events and trophies for meat category winners and overall champion. For more information contact Jake Franke at (979) 966-7416.
Wendish Fest
The 33rd Annual Wendish Fest will be hosted by St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Texas Wendish Heritage Society on Sunday, Sept. 26, at Serbin, Texas. The day will offer lots of Wendish history, heritage, culture and family activities at the St. Paul Picnic Grounds. The traditional Wendish noon meal will be available at 10:30 a.m. for $12 and children $6. To-go and drive-thru will also be available at 9:30 a.m. All take-out meals are $12. Winchester Book Club
The Winchester Book Club will be held on September 21 at 7 p.m. at Zilss Hall. The book selected for this month’s discussion is “The Art of Hearing Heartbeats” by Jan-Phillip Sendker. A beautiful love story set in Burma, covering the time span 1930 until the present.
Quilt Block Paint Class
The next scheduled Quilt Block Paint class, that has openings in registration, is Saturday, November 13 at 10 a.m. at Zilss Hall in Winchester. The class is 6 hours, and a 2 x 2 quilt block will be completed. You may register at www.quiltblocktrail.com and use a credit card to pay the registration fee by calling Rhoda Gersch at (979) 242-3213. The only thing you need to bring to class is a sack lunch; all other supplies are provided.
Community Garage Sale There will be a Community
There will be a Community Wide Garage Sale in Winchester on Saturday, October 2. If you are interested in participating, please contact Bobbie Hajek at (979) 639-1646 or email her at bbhajek8255@gmail.com. There will be a small charge to help cover the advertising expense.
Barn Board Quilt Trail
Drive out to Winchester pick up a map at Murphy’s or Zilss Hall and enjoy viewing the 65 quilt blocks displayed in our area. The trail is self-drive, available at your convenience, and is a great way to spend a hot afternoon viewing quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road. Winchester Barn Board Quilt Trail maps can be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange.
Recycling Trailer
The Winchester recycling trailer is located on the side of Zilss Hall on Memorial Hall Street. Please place your recycling in the appropriate bins. We would appreciate that you make sure that you close the bins so that any trash will remain in the bins and not blow.
Zilss Community Hall
Anyone wishing to rent Zilss Hall should contact (512) 434-0292. The hall is following COVID-19 requirements. Rent is very reasonable.
The Little Free Library
The library is always open and has a variety of authors. Space is limited, so please, if you donate a book(s), look through the current selection and take as many as you leave. The Little Free Library is housed under the roof of the patio at Zilss Hall. There is also a bulletin board available on the patio. If you have an event, you would like advertised, please post.

First United Methodist
The Winchester First United Methodist Church has returned to service inside the sanctuary. Please wear a mask and social distance inside the church. The Church has services on the first and third Sunday of the month at 8:30 a.m. The Rev Patricia Zaiontz-Newcomer is the pastor.
Shiloh Baptist Church

St. Michael’s Lutheran Church
The weekly worship service takes place at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning in the sanctuary. Following the worship service, you may gather in the Education Building for Bible study and Sunday school beginning at 10:15 a.m.
You are welcome to visit for worship and Bible study. When you come to the church, please introduce yourself to Pastor Nate, he will be thrilled to get to meet you.
Condolences
Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family of Tom Hudson. Tom passed away on Sept. 13 at the age of 60. He is survived by his wife Robin, mother Shirley, daughters Amanda (Shawn) Romero and Jacki (Andrew) Short as well as five grandchildren and two sisters and their families.
