What 2021 Was Like for the Animal Shelter

Happy New Year! Looks like 2022 is blowing in with bang and we’re ready to take on the challenges she is sure to present. But first let’s look at 2021 (thankfully in the rearview mirror) In the world of shelters and rescue, 2021 feels a little like she tried to destroy most of us across the country.

Adoptions are down 30-50 percent across the country but the volume of animals in need in Fayette County is mindboggling. However, against all odds, with our community of supporters, sheer determination, grit, and a commitment to save every life we can, GJAS staff, donors, volunteers, fosters, and our rescue partners have succeeded, and we are thrilled to see 2021 take her #freedomride!

2021 At A Glance:

Intake: 1461 (757 cats & 704 dogs)

Adoptions: 805 (575 cats & 230 dogs)

Transferred to Rescue: 364 (44 cats & 320 dogs)

Return to Owner: 116 (11 cats & 105 dogs)

Humane Euthanasia: 33 (25 cats & 8 dogs)

You have helped us treat dogs/cats for: parvo, ringworm, coccidia, giardia, ringworm, demodectic mange, broken limbs, more ringworm, amputated limbs, upper respiratory infections, ringworm, urinary tract infections, heartworms and ringworm. All of these conditions can be easily treated, some of these can be catastrophic in a shelter environment.

Celebrate 2021 with us and buckle up for 2022! The highs are really high, and the lows are really low, and we’ve experienced all of this, some days before 10 a.m., and some days long after 10 p.m.
