Wessels Crowned Queen as County Fair Returns

La Grange High School junior Charlee Wessels won the title of 2021 Fair Queen (and a $2,800 scholarship) with season ticket sales of $27,510. She also sold $13,230 in carnival passes.

The fair was back to normal.

After most of The Fayette County Fair was cancelled last year because of the pandemic, Labor Day weekend was back to being festive at the fairgrounds in La Grange this year.

The 94th annual fair drew slightly smaller crowds that normal, but thousands still attended the four days of fun.

The fair kicked off with the Queens Contest Thursday, and in a pleasant surprise for fair organizers, ticket sales were impressive.

Charlee Wessels won the title of 2021 Fair Queen (and a $2,800 scholarship) with season ticket sales of $27,510. She was sponsored by the CenTex Storm. In all, Queen’s contestants sold $96,500 in fair tickets (equating to 2,757 season passes) plus $38,590 in presale carnival tickets. Wessels also sold the most carnival passes ($13,230) to win an additional scholarship.

The total sales of $135,090 came in spite of the fact that some 1,200 presold tickets from last year’s fair were still valid for this year’s fair.

“I want to thank everybody who puts this fair on,” Fayette County Judge Joe Weber said during the Queen’s Contest, alluding to other events that have been cancelled amidst the pandemic. “It was time, you took a risk, but it was time.”

Brynna Stackhouse, sponsored by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Memorial Society was first runner-up with sales of $19,545. Kayler Burnett, sponsored by the Kyla Faith Memorial, was second runner-up with sales of $18,200.

Rory Halpain, sponsored by La Grange Noon Lions Club, was third runner-up with sales of $14,130.

Most Photogenic Winner was Brynna Stackhouse.

Miss Congeniality Winner was Braidy Fike.

Miss Beauty and Poise was Brynna Stackhouse.

The fair continued through Sunday with stars such as Doug Stone, Joe Nichols and .38 Special performing.
