Weber: No Vaccine or Mask Mandate for Co. Employees

Fayette County Judge Joe Weber said he has no plans to require County employees to get vaccinated for coronavirus.

The topic came up during a Fayette County Commissioners Court budget planning meeting on Wednesday, July 28. Commissioners were discussing whether the resurgence of COVID-19 cases could affect the County budget next year. Pct. 3 Commissioner Harvey Berckenhoff brought up the news of President Joe Biden requiring all federal employees and contractors to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or else submit to regular testing.

“Is there any way that’s going to trickle down to local government,” Berckenhoff asked Weber.

“Based on where we’re at right now, there’s no way I would mandate that County employees have to be vaccinated or wear a mask,” Weber said. “I’m not going there.

“I trust the people in this County, in consultation with their doctor, know what’s best for their own health and that of their children,” Weber added. “I’m not mandating anything. Whether it trickles down here – that’s up to the Governor of the State of Texas.”

“I think they’re going to get caught up in some court cases,” said Pct. 1 Commissioner Jason McBroom.

Earlier in the meeting, County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau told Commissioners that the County has seen cases go from six to “two or three times that.”
