Shooting in Columbus Leaves Man Dead

• A mid-day shooting in Columbus Oct. 18 left one man dead. Columbus Police Department responded to the 800 block of Live Oak St. in reference to a gunshot victim. Police arrived on scene and determined multiple gunshots had been fired at 46-year-old Sigsbee W. Thompson. Thompson was flown to a Katy area hospital but later died as a result of the wounds. Columbus ISD campuses and nearby daycare centers were placed on precautionary lockdown that afternoon while law enforcement secured the area. The Columbus Police Department is working the case as a murder, and asks that anyone with information to contact CPD or Colorado County Crime Stoppers.

• The civil trial of a former Caldwell police officer accused of injuring an inmate in the Burleson County Jail has ended with the jury finding insufficient evidence of excessive force. Robert Riley Baucom was accused of shoving and injuring Chester Jackson in the Burleson County Jail, and then he pleaded no contest in 2020 to a charge of Class A misdemeanor official oppression and was sentenced to one year of deferred adjudication probation. He also surrendered his peace officer’s license.

• Starting Oct. 25, those individuals whose telephone number begins with area code 361 will have to include the number when calling another 361 number. This will also affect other area codes. On July 16, 2020, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued an order approving 988 as the three-digit abbreviated dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

A record-breaking six-digit number was presented to the Brenham ISD Board of Trustees Monday for money raised for mini grants by the Brenham ISD Education Foundation. According to Director of Finance Kim Weatherby, $101,200 was raised to help aide teachers and staff with mini grants for their classroom or grade level.
