Sheriff Seriously Injured In One-Vehicle Accident

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek was seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident late Saturday night/early Sunday morning in the Fayetteville area.

As of Wednesday he was still in intensive care at St. David’s in Austin with facial injuries.

“He’s doing really well, he can text and we’ve been texting him,” said Lt. David Beyer. “We wish we could go see him, but we can’t because of COVID (precautions).

“He’s going to be out a few weeks.”

Beyer said Korenek was a passenger in a vehicle that night and the driver was unfamiliar with the area, and conditions were also foggy.

“They ran off the road and up an embankment,” Beyer said.

Beyer said no one else in the vehicle was injured.

The Texas Department of Public Safety responded to and investigated the accident but their crash report was not available at press time.
