The Shelby American Legion Auxiliary Post 602 is holding a quilt raffle for a distinctive, handstitched quilt with a rich history. The drawing will be held Tuesday, Dec. 2. Donations are $5 each or three for $10. Post Commander Calvin Coufal commented, “Back in the 1960s, the Ladies Auxiliary hand-stitched every piece and it sold at auction for $300. Carolyn Bruenig, owner of the Shelby store, is placing it back in the hands of the post as a raffle item. Bruenig’s father was a charter member of Post 602.”

Contact Angie at (281) 450-9248 or any post member for your chance to own this beautiful piece of craftsmanship and help provide support and advocacy for veterans and their families.

Westside Store

The Westside convenience store is slated to reopen its doors next month, promising to resume its usual offerings with a new look and introducing lots of new amenities. The store was recently acquired by local residents Alan Meinen and Rosa Moore. The couple own several Subway stores in Houston. Meinen is the uncle of the former co-owner, Christina Carden.

“In addition to convenience items, our plan is to offer homemade biscuits, sandwiches, salads, chili dogs, cookies and pies—it depends on what people want,” stated Moore. The building has been gutted and a kitchen is being built in the back of the store.

New floors are maple hardwood. “The goal is to bring it back to be similar to its original appearance. There was a pay phone outside in the 1970s and I’m currently scouting old photos to see what signs hung out front.”

Moore located a bench in Galveston that is similar to the bench that sat outside many moons ago. The outside walls will be covered with stucco and the diesel fuel tank in the back was recently given a new paint job. The front counter, hanging lights, old tin ceiling tiles and several other furnishings were collected for the store at the antiques show. The drive-thru window will allow for pickup orders.
