Senior Connections’ Ageless Artistry Showcase to Benefit Building Campaign
The La Grange Roadrunners showed up in style in La Grange at the Randolph Rec. Center, and even grabbed some members of the audience to add to their group of partners and corners and they taught members how to square dance on the spot. The Road Runners were so good, they made it easy for newbies to follow and made it look like they knew what we were doing. Pictured here is Charlie Torres, Amanda Gifford, Denise Roberts, Gary Carpenter, Tammy Horton, Less Wyatt, Julian and Charlotte Godsey, and Kathy Carpenter. Senior Connections was blessed by another delivery of bingo prizes from Amazon. This is the second shipment of gifts for members. Pictured in front of the stacks of boxes are Mortadha from Amazon, volunteer Sharon Rodrigues, and board member and volunteer Milton Kohler.
Senior Connections meets in Schulenburg at 1111 Bohlmann Ave., in Weimar at 301 W. Saint Charles St., in Flatonia at 403 E. North Main St., in La Grange at 653 East Pearl St., and at Arts for Rural Texas in Schulenburg at 1206 Lyons Ave.
The online auction for our Ageless Artistry Showcase, featuring our members’ creativity, will start Sunday morning, Sept. 27, at 6 a.m., and close the next Sunday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. You can see all the art available to purchase and bid on at 1203 Kessler Ave. in Schulenburg beginning Sept. 12, when we open the entire show to the public with a reception at the gallery in the Gorman building, known as Jack’s Gallery. The reception will be held from 3-5 p.m. and the show will remain on display until Nov. 28.
Proceeds from the auction will support the Capitol Campaign to renovate the much-needed future building in downtown Schulenburg in the old Galipps Grocery Store. Many more pieces of art will be on display but will not be for sale, from our incredibly amazing participants. We have artists ranging in age from 60 to 95. Instructors and staff will participate too. Much of the artwork you will see is from our Artful Friday classes, which we provide in partnership with Arts for Rural Texas. Professional artists teach these classes and inspire us as they share their skills and techniques.
Mark your calendars for these exciting dates and see for yourself, and consider supporting the auction. It’s a winwin situation.
This month, members will have the opportunity to update their vaccinations. Hometown Wellness will be joining us at our locations; all you will need to do is bring your ID card and insurance information. This is a generous service Hometown Wellness provides for our members.
Aug. 31 through Sept. 4. Our hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. except in La Grange, where we close at 1:30 p.m.
On Monday, Aug. 31, join in Schulenburg where every day begins with a hot cup of coffee, conversation, a little bit of competitive games, and some puzzle-building. We go into lunch service at 11:15 a.m., where we share announcements, prayer concerns, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a blessing of the meal. Our nutritious, homecooked meal for the day will include taco soup by Amanda Kridel, served with Fritos and cornbread, plus desserts by our members.
On Monday, Gary Carpenter will drop by again for our lunch and learn program and go into a little bit more depth about the painted churches in our area. Perhaps we will pick from these churches and make an adventure out of it for a later date.
At 12:30 p.m., we go into bingo, and we have a VIP caller coming from the Flatonia Health Care Center. Ginger Schumer will call our bingo for us. She will also be a regular on our calendar.
Join on Tuesday, Sept. 1 in Weimar at the First United Methodist Church fellowship hall. It is going to be a real treat for you for lunch. Oakridge Smokehouse fried fish, coleslaw, and macaroni and cheese are on the menu. Members will donate desserts. Mike Stroup and Annie Rost will join for music from noon-1 p.m. Alyssa with First Texas Home Health Care will call the bingo, and Alyssa is an amazing baker. She provided some delicious sourdough chocolate chip cookies for us to share with all our other bingo callers and speakers.
On Wednesday, Sept. 2, finds us in two separate locations. It will be a busy day in Schulenburg and many people will join for lunch and bingo. Because of this, we will start our lunch service earlier, so arrive well before 11 a.m. to get seated and grab a cool beverage. Connie Koopmann is providing roast beef and gravy, along with green beans and our house salad made by our amazing volunteers, and yes, desserts provided by our members. We go straight into bingo on Wednesdays in Schulenberg, and Kelly Sobotik with Crown Hospice will join us for that exciting game.
We will also be in La-Grange at Randolph Rec. Center, Building A. Roast beef and gravy are for lunch in La Grange, the same menu as in Schulenburg, served with beans, green beans, our house salad, and dessert, the meal is sure to please your palate. At 12 noon, the Lunch and Learn program will feature Carrol Perales and Kelly Cedar-Ryba from the Fayette Public Library in La Grange. They will talk about the services they offer and what they would like to collaborate with us on, including a book club and other fun activities for seniors at the library. Amanda Gifford of the La Grange Chamber of Commerce will bring the bingo game to members.
Artful Friday’s continue Sept. 4 at Art for Rural Texas, 1206 Lyons Ave. in Schulenburg. We begin a whole new month of art classes. You must sign up for these classes in advance, and this month’s classes are full. We do have a waitlist; if you would like to get your name on it, call (979) 743-3227.
This month, Bonnie Karstedt returns. She taught needle felting a few months ago, and this month she will be teaching rag rug hooking. Jaime Janda will be teaching a mixed media class in the other classroom. She tends to break artists/students out of their comfort zones and teach them new things. We serve a light lunch after the class, and I am so grateful to Brenda Ray for coming and helping with this.
