Senior Citizen Center Sees Increase In Participation
Recently, an anonymous donor drop off some Whataburger gift cards at Navidad Valley Community Connections (NVCC) and left a note that said “for Bingo Prizes.” So, NVCC started having a drawing every Monday to generate some excitement. So far, Aileen Kasper and Freda Ellison have been prize winners. Then, NVCC offered a Whataburger gift card for the last Bingo of the day, which is always a black-out, and Betty Stolarski was the winner this past Wednesday.
One person and 10 Whataburger gift cards have made a tremendous difference, in a little way, in our member’s lives. They look forward to coming in to see who will be the lucky one and it sure adds some spice to their lives at the center. A small gift like a Whataburger gift card sure can bring a smile to their face. NVCC appreciates the anonymous donor for bringing joy to the hearts and smiles to the faces of our members.

This past Wednesday, NVCC had another great day at the center, with a total of 25 members in the house. NVCC is pulling chairs out of storage now and are now shooting for a goal of serving 30 members in one day. Little by little, NVCC is committed to reaching pre- COVID numbers by welcoming folks back, while seeking some new members, too. NVCC wants a more diverse group coming to the center, one that is representative of the community. Keep inviting your friends and neighbors to come by. We know it will be slow going on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as we start our new “drop-in” hours, but with just a little time, we should be seeing groups pop up and come on in. We figured that we are here, at the Center, working anyway, so why not let others come in and do their own thing? The Center will be available more hours and maybe when our members do just want to drop in and join in a game or share a nutritious meal with us. While we do provide a meal service for seniors, we do ask for a free will offering to help offset the cost of the meal supplies that is provided such as the plates, utensils, cups and napkins. Everyone contributes willingly, knowing there is a cost associated with that good meal, and it is a tremendous help to our organization. There is even a small group that now gets together on Sunday afternoons to play Mexican Train dominoes and they play at each other’s homes. The Center has been offered as a site for them that is more centrally located when their group gets bigger, as each week others are told about it and the group is growing. So, the center may be open on Sunday afternoons soon.
Navidad Valley Community Connections is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.
