Senior Center Receives Needed Computers
Navidad Valley Community Connections (NVCC) Senior Center in Schulenburg has a full calendar for the month of October and is hard at work on the November calendar as the holiday season approaches.
Speakers for the month are lined up, but are always looking for more topics to cover and any businesses or individual may approach NVCC with an interesting topic, to introduce yourself and your business to the elders, tell members about your product and how you contribute to the community, and what brought you to the Schulenburg and Fayette County area.
NVCC members would love to hear from those in the bed and breakfast business, from dairy farmers and cheese makers, from the CEO at St. Mark’s hospital, from some of the wineries in the area, etc. If interested and need some more details, call the Senior Center at (979) 743-3227 and ask for CarolAnn Thacker.
October is Literacy Month and members have chosen a project to share outside the Center. They are asking all members to bring in a book to share with some assisted living homes and nursing homes, along with some for local libraries. The center would like to contribute to the lending libraries as well. If there are any books left over, NVCC will take them to Second Chance for mission work.
If you have some old gallons of house paint laying around, NVCC can use them at the Senior Center to apply base colors to the Garden poles being prepared for sale. Call Cindy or CarolAnn at the Senior Center and they can come get them.
NVCC is going to generate some excitement at the Senior Center as the organization prepares to set up a table at the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce Fall Craft and Bake Sale that is coming up on Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Schulenburg KC Hall. NVCC has a sponsorship opportunity here, call Cindy at the Center or email navidadvalleycc@gmail.com if you are interested.
A sign-up sheet has started up at the Center for homemade goods such as sauerkraut, cooked cheese spread, noodles, cookies and cakes. Please package them for distribution in baggies. Whole cakes will not be cut up, but will be sold whole to take home for families to enjoy. All proceeds will benefit the Senior Center programs and stays local. Volunteers who would like to help us on this Sunday in November will serve a two-hour shift only, to give others a chance to help out. Let CarolAnn Thacker know where you can help out, and remember, let’s go have some fun, show off our crafts and baked goods.
Also, NVCC can have a raffle at the table, so the center is seeking a donor to possibly donate an item or a service, and this raffle will be a tremendous help to boost sales at this event. A barbecue pit, a welded art item, or something along these lines of homemade art or items with a value of $300 will help get this raffle list started.
When the country experienced the shutdowns in 2020 and 2021, NVCC realized that it could have done more if it had computers. This past week, NVCC was blessed with the donation of five computers for the Senior Center.
Bill Bishop from La Grange is a retired citizen with skills he knows he can still share. He is a computer wizard and he has taken up the task of providing refurbished computers to students and non-profits that have needs. He brought the NVCC Senior Center five computers with monitors, keyboards, headsets, a mouse for each and a camera on each one, plus all the cords and cables needed to get them set up. The extra bonus is that he casually says, “if you have any problems, just give me a call, and I’ll come by and see what the problem is.” Bill agreed that he would make a good Lunch and Learn Series speaker, so he will be back.
