Second Chance Lends a Helping Hand

Last week, as the La Grange Randolph Recreation Center prepared for three days of “ice” skating, somebody had a brilliant idea.

Central Texas isn’t exactly known for hockey sticks or double toe loops, so the beginners who would come out to try their hands (well, feet) at skating might need a little assistance. Maybe these newbie ice dancers could use aluminum walkers to gain some stability.

Where do you find affordable walkers in Fayette County? At Second Chance Emporium, of course, so the call went from the rec center to the second-hand store on South Reynolds.

Fayette County is a pretty cooperative place. Second Chance, after all, is run by a consortium of ten churches. So when Randolph Center chief Janet Rangel asked to borrow some walkers for the skating event, the answer was an immediate yes. Within a few hours, four walkers were delivered to Randolph. And by Friday night, when skaters hit the “ice” – actually very slick plastic sheets – the walkers were in constant use.

The walkers will be back at Second Chance by the time the store opens for a special one-day sale this coming Thursday. The store will be closed Christmas weekend.
