School Celebrates Testing Accountability Rise

At Monday’s school board meeting, La Grange ISD Superintendent Andy McHazlett thanked staff, highlighted summer work: hiring, handbooks, campus prep for the upcoming school year.

McHazlett talked about the Summer Leadership Institute which was held in San Antonio and Dallas-Fort Worth. It is held each summer and includes training for school boards with continuing education credits. Many of the LGISD board members were in attendance.

He gave a report on the preliminary STAAR accountability which shows the district moving from a “C” to a “B.” He noted that district improvement doesn’t happen without campus improvement.

Assistant Superintendent Stacy Eilers reported that new teacher orientation had begun this week and all teachers would be back next Wednesday. The open house for the district schools will be Aug.

3 and the first student day will be Aug. 5.

Director of Operations Sharon Muzny gave some updates:

• High school 100 Hall sewer line replacement is progressing. The interior restroom plumbing and rebuild is moving along. They are trying to get the parking lot portion completed before school starts.

• The middle school fire alarm needs to be replaced. The district is waiting on the vendor to deliver.

• The district was not awarded the used buses that were recently bid on. The plan is to increase the bid and try at the next auction.

Muzny also told the board of the annual public safety open house that was to take place on Tuesday. This event has multi-agency participation and ongoing law-enforcement collaboration.

Director of Curriculum, Tracy Head, gave a report about Camp Summit, a kindergarten– 2nd grade early enrichment summer program held each year. She reported strong reading gains for all struggling readers who attended.
