Round Top-Carmine Students Building a Solar Car to Enter in National Competition
Round Top-Carmine students have been embarking on a fascinating student-led solar car project.
The ultimate goal is to build a four-seat vehicle powered only by sunlight that they can take to compete at the national high school solar car competition at Texas Motor Speedway in July.
Though spearheaded by students the kids are getting support from parent volunteers as well.
They recently published a December project update on the website ( www.rtcsolar. com), highlighting the progress the team made during the fall semester. One exciting milestone coming up is this Saturday, January 10, when the team will be working to get the chassis sitting on its wheels for the first timeāan important step forward in the build process.
Part of the project requires the team to submit a scrapbook documenting the entire process from beginning to end.
The team is now exiting Stage 3 and entering Stage 4, which marks the transition from early design and fabrication into final assembly and testing. This phase also represents the start of the most significant fundraising efforts. The highest priorities include covering the race entry fee ($5,000) and securing the solar power system ($12,000), both of which are essential to completing the car and competing.
