Republicans Carry County, State, Nation
Decision Day: 2024
Election results are in and Donald Trump will be the next President of the United States.
The Trump/Vance ticket carried Texas with 56.26 percent of the vote. Fayette County voted overwhelmingly in favor of Trump with 80.26 percent, according to unofficial results. The count here was 10,684 for Trump and 2,510 for Kamala Harris.
Many expected a tight race between incumbent Senator Ted Cruz and the Democratic challenger Collin Allred. But Cruz easily kept his seat by more than nine percentage points statewide. Unofficial statewide results show Cruz leading that race 53.15 percent to Allred’s 44.46 percent.
Incumbent U.S. Representative Michael McCaul will also keep his District 10 seat. He won easily with 63.64 percent of the vote. Democrat Theresa Boisseau collected 33.97 percent.
State Rep. Stan Kitzman was unopposed in the general election, as were all of the candidates for local of- fice who were up for election this year:
• James Herbrich for County Attorney,
• Keith Korenek for Sheriff, • Sylvia Mendoza for County Tax Assessor-Collector, • Jason McBroom for Pct. 1 Commissioner,
• Harvey Berckenhoff for Pct. 3 Commissioner,
• Billy Roensch for Pct. 1 Constable,
• Roger Wunderlich for Pct. 2 Constable,
• Robert Chambers for Pct. 3 Constable and
• Jason Strickland for Pct.
4 Constable.
Herbrich was the only non-incumbent.
Voter turnout for this election was 73.36 percent in Fayette County. That’s slightly lower than the last Presidential Election in 2020, when 74.9 percent of registered voters cast ballots.
Fayette County Elections Administrator Terri Hefner reported no major issues with voting this year.
“It went so smooth it scared me,” she said. “You always have something in the day that bumps you a little bit to wake you up. But this time it went off perfectly. It was a good election.
“It takes a village to get this election done, and there was a village here last night making sure everything was handled appropriately and counted correctly,” she added. “It was an awesome feat.”
Fayette County Republican Party Chairman Michael Schlabach said he was pleased with the turnout and the outcome.
“I thought it was awesome,” Schlabach said. They said it was going to take two weeks to count the results but it took only two hours. It was overwhelming.
“What helped us were all the Democrats who voted for Trump because they were so sick of the last administration’s policies,” he added. “A lot of die hard Democrats are tired. Inflation, interest rates – it’s killing people. I wasn’t surprised at the outcome. I thought it was going to go this way. But a lot of people I know were surprised.”
