Five officers of Chromcik Council, Knights of Columbus of La Grange, visited Clement Trlicek Sr. at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and found the La Grange man recovering nicely and in good spits. Trlicek, severely burned several months before, hoped to be home within the coming weeks for a few days. His Sunday visitors were: Rev. Harry Mazurkiewicz, Douglas Supak, Billy Koehl, Lawrence Adamcik and Adolph Jurajda.
The September term grand jury of the 155th District Court of Fayette County completed two days of investigation before returning 14 felony indictments into open court and one no-bill. In its report to District Judge Paul Huser, the grand jury noted that salaries of county employees were inequitably low. The tribunal recommended that the sheriff and his deputies receive salary increases of 20% and that all other employees get raises of 15%. The grand jury also reported that the jailor’s quarters in the Fayette County Jail were in need of repainting. Windowsills in the courthouses were aging and needed attention. It also was noted that fire extinguishers in the courthouse were in poor condition and needed to be replaced. Louis J. Schroeder of La Grange was foreman of the grand jury.
County Ag Agent Clinton R. Bippert described the outlook for fall and winter pastures and small grain crops in Fayette County as ‘just great’ as a result of the general rains across the area.
Enrollment for the 1971-72 term in La Grange public schools stood at 1,413 students. That figure included 33 Giddings High School students who attended classes in the LGISD vocational school, six Sacred Heart elementary students who took corrective reading and math courses at Hermes Elementary and 17 Sacred Heart seventh and eighth graders who were enrolled in a junior high PE course. The high school had 110 freshmen, 144 sophomores, 147 juniors and 115 seniors.
Reserved seat tickets for La Grange Leopard home football games were going on sale at 8 a.m., Friday, Sept. 17. The Leps, who only had four home games for the year, were going up against Sweeny, Refugio, Hearn and Brenham. A booklet of four tickets sold for $6.
La Grange’s Leopards went away with a 27-26 football victory over Giddings that was about as nerve-tingling as any ever seen in these parts. The game was nine and a half minutes deep in the third quarter when Lep fullback Paul Risper bulled across from a yard out to make the score 25-12, La Grange. Quarterback David Zatopek elected to go the limit and passed to Buddy Grobe for the two bonus points. After Giddings posted its second touchdown of the half, the scoreboard read 27-26, La Grange. In the fourth quarter, Buff signal-caller Jeff Bloom apparently got instructions from the bench, “We don’t want a tie. It’s either win or lose.” Trying for two points, Bloom was stopped inches short of the goal line, and the score stayed 27-26, La Grange.
Funeral services were held for: Miss Mollie Mozisek, 77, of La Grange; Otto G. Rohde, 58, a Fayette County native; Mrs. G. A. (Hulda) Wunderlich, 81, of Winedale; Leon Clinton Hart, 62, who was buried at Winchester; Frank E. Stos, 93, of Ammannsville; Mrs. Rudolph (Tilda Ruth) Hagemann, 61, of La Grange; and Mrs. Louise Voss, 81, of Warda.
Donna Gayle Klesel, a graduate of Bishop Forest High School and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Klesel of Schulenburg, was named to the spring semester honor roll in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas. Donna was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Bohuslav of Ammannsville. Majoring in medical technology, she was entering her junior year in college.
Homemade ice cream was being served at the Waldeck Lutheran Sunday School’s family night gathering. The public was invited.
The La Grange FFA held its first meeting of the school year with Roger Brandt presiding. Louis Bargas, chairman of the float committee, reported that the chapter’s entry in the Fayette County Fair parade won third place. Dues for the school year were set at $3.50. Delegates for the FFA meeting in Columbus were Greg Hunger and Frank Heger. Roger Brandt and Louis Bargas were running for district office.
