In the new Tri-County Teenage Baseball League season, the La Grange Braves had won one and lost one. The team defeated Schulenburg, 7-5, in its lid-lifter, but dropped a 10-8 decision to its La Grange counterparts, the Ravens, in the second match. The Braves were managed by Eugene Niemeyer with Billy Miller serving as his assistant. Those on the Braves’ roster were: Marcus Cook, Kevin von Minden, Mike Maxwell, Mickey Muzny, Mark Muzny, Freddie Adamcik, Robert Poole, Wayne Ward, Neal Miller, Justin Bartos, Jeffery Lindemann, Mike Pechal, Jay Ward, Dennis Wessels and Darrel Kalmus. Managing the Ravens was Lawrence Hatfield, assisted by Leslie Kovar. Team members included: Larry Hatfield, David Janda, Stephen Kovar, Bubba Smith, Jimmy Zimmerhanzel, Wayne Zimmerhanzel, Tommy Cox, Keith Hatfield, Johnny Johnson, James Hatfield, Gary Dippel, Kenny Zimmerhanzel, Terry Wunderlich and Lyman Smith.
The Rev. H. T. Flachmeier, 64, who had served as pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in La Grange for 21 years, died in a San Antonio hospital after a lengthy illness. St. Paul’s current pastor, Clarence Oestreich, assisted at Rev. Flachmeier’s funeral in Beeville. The Rev. Flachmeier, who was buried in the La Grange City Cemetery, also had served for a number of years as chaplain of the La Grange Volunteer Fire Department, as well as the Guadalupe District Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Associations.
The La Grange Industrial Foundation purchased 12 acres of property adjacent to Guenther Airport. According to L.J. Schroeder, president; George Hajovsky, vice president; and C.A. Lemmons, director; the land would be available for industry interested in locating in the area. La Grange Chamber of Commerce directors voted to check on erecting a sign on the property advertising it as a possible industrial site.
The statewide quarantine on Texas swine movement had been renewed and remained in effect. However, there had not been a single new case of hog cholera in the state for a week.
Fayette Memorial Hospital candy stripers were: Elaine Gorka, Susan Prause, Sharon Schilling, Debbie Bagent, Melody Mueller, Mary Lou Mayer, Patricia Kruse, Judy Guenther, Sandra Koether, Loretta Churchill, Cheryl Mach, Elaine Matocha, Virginia Legler, Laurie Albrecht, Debra Lincke, Dianna Mueller and Kathy Scholtz. The sponsors were Mrs. Sarah Morgan and Barbara Hrncir.
The Schroeder Drug Demons of La Grange broke even in their weekend South Central Texas Amateur League games. They won over Wharton, 4-5, but dropped the game against Flatonia’s Wildcats, 10-5. Danny Glaiser, southpawed a seven-hit performance at Fair Park, never more than one lick in an inning, and whiffed four in the Wharton game. The Demons garnered only six swats, but utilized theirs to better advantage. Jimmie Marek opened the frame with a base on balls, after which Bobby Glaiser lifted a 1-0 pitch over the left field barrier. In the eighth, Danny Muzny’s onebagger, Bill Bohne’s bunt, Rick Peters’ single and an infield error on Marek’s chance spiked what proved to be the winning run. In the Flatonia tilt, Steve Janda, Bob Glaiser and Hal Tiedt pitched in that order. Calvin Kurtz started on the mound for Flatonia.
Lee Roy Matocha was playing at the chicken and sausage dinner being served family-style at St. John’s Parish Recreation Hall in Fayetteville on Sun., June 13. Serving started at 11 a.m. and the cost of the meal was $1.50 for adults and 75¢ for children.
Erwin R. Stavinoha retired May 31 after completing 31 years in the postal service. Much of his tenure was spent as a mail carrier on Schulenburg’s RFD4. The veteran mailman, who also had worked at the Engle Post Office, served under postmasters F.L. Herzik, W.A. Farek Sr., Lewis Nix and Bob Pratka.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Meta Marburger, 87, a native of Haw Creek; Mrs. Julia Kocian, 78, of Fayetteville; Mrs. Lottie Warnken, 91, of La Grange; and Herman A. Franke, 98, a native of Black Jack Springs.
La Grange High School senior favorites of the class of 1971 included Mr. LHS, James Bremer, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hollis D. Bremer, and Miss LHS, Bonnie Koether, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn C. Koether.
La Grange Motor Co. advertised the 1971 two-door Pinto for $1,919 and the two-door Maverick for sale at $2,175.
