An all-day investigation by Sheriff T.J. Flournoy resulted in the arrest of five Smithville area men in connection with a theft at the Ivanhoe Club in Plum. The quintet, who had allegedly broken into a coin-operated pool table, were released after each paid $25 misdemeanor theft fines and $25 for damages.
Every exterior window but one was smashed at the Clothes Closet, atop Monument Hill and just across the road from the Fritsch Auf! Gift Shop sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning. Officers said a heavy stick or iron rod or pipe was likely used in the vandalism because many of the partitions in the all-metal window frames were bent. The Clothes Closet was owned by Mrs. Sue Rheman, who was in Dallas on a fall shopping trip for her store when the vandalism occurred.
The La Grange Lions Club’s eighth annual radio auction closed out on a most successful note after a three-day run over KVLG/ KBUK Radio. The total netted was $4,216, plus five outright gifts of new uniforms for the La Grange High School Band. Donors were: Dr. and Mrs. H.T. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Giesber, Dr. and Mrs. Jack Schwake, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Franklin and Schroeder Drug.
A three-run rally in the top of the 12th inning gave the La Grange Schroder Drug Demons a 4-1 victory over the Luling Oilers at Luling, but the story was different at Victoria on Sunday. The Victorians defeated the Demons, 10-3, on the strength of a vicious 15-hit attack, four of them for extra bases, in this South Central Texas Amateur League encounter. The La Grange-Luling tilt was a cliffhanger all the way. The Oilers dished their lone counter in the seventh on a homer by pitcher Jim Westbrook, and La Grange forced it into extra innings in the top of the ninth when Wayne Otto doubled and came around on a couple of bobbles. Walks to Butch Blume and Ricky Peters, along with singles by Danny Muzny, Jimmy Marek, Danny Glaiser and Otto crashed over the game-winning trio in the 12th stanza. La Grange started fast off Billy Cox at Victoria, notching a pair in the very first go-round on one-baggers by Butch Blume, Peters and Bob Glaiser, along with a Victoria throwing error. The South Zone leaders got one of them back in the last of the first before the Demons added what proved to be their final counter in the third when Peters homered over the right field barrier.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Frieda Maas, 73, of Rutersville; Hulda Gebhard 82, of La Grange; Milton Bergmann, 57, a former Winedale resident; Mrs. Elizabeth Knippel, 85, of Fayetteville; and Lori Ann Kouba, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Kouba, of Cistern.
Fayette Electric Cooperative’s District 5 members in Cistern elected John Beck as their permanent chairman and Mr. Beck appointed Mrs. Milton Janca as secretary. Two director nominations were made, one for incumbent director Ed Thiede and the other for Jerry Alexander. Mr. Thiede received more than two-thirds of the votes so his name was to appear on the ballot as the only candidate for director, District 5, at Fayette Electric’s annual membership meeting on July 21.
Sacred Heart School graduated the following 14 students: Paul Bartosh, Debbie Bippert, Darrell Bertsch, Georgie Bordovsky, Jimmy Guenther, Marilyn Kallus, Joan Knippel, James Legler, Vicki Michalsky, Gary Recek, Allen Schertz, Morgan Smith, Barry Vasek and Wayne Zimmerhanzel. Awards for the highest averages were presented to Wayne Zimmerhanzel and Marilyn Kallus.
Misses Terry Jaster and Nancy Fritsch were to depart via plane on May 30 for a six-week holiday in Europe. They planned to visit with Sp/5 and Mrs. David Fritsch in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Irma Jean Dobbins, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Dobbins of La Grange, graduated from Texas Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a minor in biology. The 1966 graduate of La Grange High School also completed prerequisites for a major in physical therapy. Miss Dobbins was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and served as a member of TSU’s election commission during the spring term.
New officers of Fayette Memorial Hospital Auxiliary were: Mrs. Eugene Schiavone, president-elect; Mrs. John Svoboda, secretary-treasurer; Mrs. Herbert T. Smith, president; Mrs. Irwin C. Hardcastle, auditor; Mrs. Burleson Graham, historian; and Mrs. P. Dean Garrett, vice president.
The La Grange Chamber of Commerce announced that local businessman V.A. Hrbacek had accepted the responsibility of representing La Grange as a delegate in the Texas Flight for Understanding that was to visit Paris, Stockholm and Moscow on behalf of Americans held captive in North Vietnam.
