Schulenburg City Manager Lewis Nix reported that the lights at the new city pavilion had been shot out and other damage had occurred at the Little League ballpark. Disturbed over the increasing amount of city property being defaced or destroyed, the Schulenburg City Council voted to pay $50 to anyone providing information leading to a vandalism conviction.
Thirty-five couples of the Alamo Amblers Trailer Club, 33 of them traveling with their trailers, concluded their first excursion to La Grange. The club, which had John C. Marburger of La Grange as its secretary and treasurer, was organized in January 1964 and had 52 active members, most from South Central Texas. The Ramblers hosted a number of La Grange guests to a sumptuous potluck supper in the Home Demonstration Club building. The visitors were particularly impressed with the shady areas of the fairgrounds and view of the Colorado River Valley as well as the hurry-up facilities provided by La Grange Utilities.
Fayette County Tax Assessor and Collector Gilbert H. Eck was honored for 25 years of service at the annual Texas Assessors and Collectors Association Convention in Dallas. The association was created in 1934, the year the Texas Legislature merged the two offices.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Leona Moss, 76, of La Grange; Mrs. Annie Witt, 75, of La Grange; Anna Lydia Hannusch, 76, of Winchester; Jerome L. Korenek, 73, of La Grange; and Alvin A. Domasch, 74, of Ledbetter.
The southern part of Fayette County received some drought-denting rain Tuesday night. Ammannsville reported four inches, while the Swiss Alp area and Schulenburg received two. The total rainfall for La Grange so far in 1971 was 6.17 inches, nine inches shy of the normal total.
Clint Bippert was a happy man Friday night because the bats of his Schroeder Drug Demons finally were beginning to ‘talk.’ La Grange scored twice in each of the first and third stanzas and then erupted for five more cushion-counters late in the game to smack the Luling oilers, 9-1, in the first night tilt of the new season. Meanwhile, Steve Janda chucked four-hit ball and fanned 14 Oilers through the first eight heats. Bob Glaiser, who hurled the ninth inning, allowed nary a base knock and whiffed once. The Demons combed Oiler moundsman Mike Burris for 13 solid licks, including a four-master by Hal Tiedt, plus a combo of two-baggers. Earl Stolle strolled to open the Demons’ first. Danny Muzny forced Stolle and Bob Glaiser was safe on the third baseman’s bad throw after fielding his roller. Danny Glaiser’s double then scored Muzny and brother Bob. Muzny singled and Rick Blume walked in the La Grange third. Dan Glasier singled to center to plate Muzny, and Blume came in when the centerfielder juggled the ball. The final score was 4-1.
The Cardinals spanked Fayetteville’s Dodgers 12-0 and the Giants defeated the Indians 4-1 in Friday night’s La Grange Little League action. The Redbirds rained 12 base knocks over the field including a homer and triple by Billy Dunk and a double by Mike Miller, as Colin Ward was setting the Dodgers down with a two-hitter and fanning six. Loser Eugene Michalsky struck out five. Tommy Supak twirled two-hit ball for the victorious Giants and contributed a double as his mates garnered five safeties off loser Larry Bippert.
Joann Zwernemann was valedictorian and Nancy Plueckhahn salutatorian of the 1971 Round Top-Carmine High School graduating class.
In an effort to achieve self-sufficiency as required by the Postal Reorganization Act, La Grange Postmaster W.P. Freytag said the cost of a first class stamp would increase from 6¢ to 8¢, while airmail would go up from 10¢ to 11¢ an ounce. The cost of second and third class mail also was increasing.
Blue ribbon casserole contest winners at the annual Fayette County Home Demonstration Club Achievement Day included: Mrs. Charles Janecka, St. Paul; Mrs. Gilbert Hermes, Trinity Hill; Mrs. C.M. Lamascus, Swiss Alp; Mrs. Malcolm Kaltwasser, Bluff; Mrs. Donald Dopslauf, Trinity Hill; Mrs. James Tobola, Swiss Alp; Mrs. Emil Hagens, Swiss Alp; Mrs. C.W. Fritsch, Rutersville; Mrs. Charles Wehmeyer, Scotts; Mrs. Leon Teinert, Warda; Mrs. Gussie Hart, Winchester; and Mrs. Arthur Brandt, St. Paul.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kilian celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at the Winchester Community Hall. Mrs. Kilian wore her wedding dress to the party. The original wedding party participants present for the reception included Martin Kilian, who served as best man, and Lillian Kocurek, who was her sister’s maid of honor. Other attendants were: Walter Herbrich and Louise Schautschnik; Erwin Zoch and Alice Ruth Zoch; Arnold Kilian and Ann Smith; and Bill Kilian and Irene Pohorelsky.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Baca observed their silver wedding anniversary with a Mass said for their intention at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Harry Mazurkiewicz as celebrant. A reception, hosted by their children, Edward L. and Rita Baca, and Miss Darlene Graf, followed at the Plum Dining Hall.
Southwest Texas State University graduates included: Richard Earl Wessels, who earned a BA degree with a teaching certificate and a major in German; and Frank Henry Pratka of La Grange, who received a BS in science in education with a major in social science.
