Falstaff Feed Division paid a record $1.65 a pound for Jerry Krebs’ 810-pound Charolais steer at the 12th annual Fayette County Junior Livestock Show. Jerry was a member of the Fayetteville FFA Chapter. Larry Pietsch of the Round Top-Carmine FFA received $2.11 a pound from Falstaff Feed Division for his 210-pound Duroc champion in the market hog division, while Kirby Oltmann sold his 125-pound Suffolk lamb champion for $2.01 a pound to La Grange Wholesale Beer Distributors.
Round Top-Carmine High School’s Georgia Prince won a first place for duplicated illustrations at the Interscholastic League Press Conference in Austin. Barbara Blaha from Schulenburg High School placed third in Class A featurettes.
Ralph Burgess, the son of V.O. (Buck) Burgess of La Grange, was named 1970 Jackson County Man of the Year. Ralph, who lived with his family in Edna, Texas, was sales manager of Wells-Wright, Inc., a ready-mix concrete industry.
Funeral services were held for: Paul Hensel, 83, of La Grange; August H. Buehring, 83, a native of La Grange; Albert Holub, 75, of Schulenburg; Mrs. Albert (Nellie) Eichler, 79, of Carmine; Edward B. Kubecka, 59, of La Grange; Mrs. W.F. Neumann, 78, a native of Shelby; and Mrs. C.V. Batot of La Grange.
Gaylon Georges of Round Top and Sherry Sheffield of Flatonia were the high point boy and girl at the Fayette County Youth Horse Show held in conjunction with the junior livestock show. In the western pleasure class, Sherry Sheffield was first; Gaylon Georges of Round Top, second; Clay Morgan of Plum, third; Michael Maas of Rutersville, fourth; and Pat Bush, fifth.
A sixth inning pinch single by David Zatopek scored the tying and winning runs, and La Grange’s Leopards went on to pad their lead to defeat the Navasota Rattlers, 13-7, at Fair Park Thursday night. Frank Kana set the pace in La Grange’s 11-hit attack with four for five, one a double. John Mode singled twice in three official tips and Bubba Riehs lashed out a one-bounce over the fence two-bagger in the first inning that accounted for two of the six markers. Ricky Kana opened on the hill for the victors and went three innings. Charles Koether, who hurled the last four, got credit for the victory. The duo allowed Navasota nine bingles between them.
The La Grange junior varsity Leopards split a double bill with Moulton last Friday, winning the first, 14-2, in a game held to four innings, but dropping the second extra-inning affair, 2-1, to the Bobcats. Dennis Winkler gave up just three swats in the eight-inning afterpiece, which Moulton won in the last of the eighth.
Mrs. J.E. (Sara) Morgan Jr.’s second campaign ad read, “50% of All Parents Are Mothers. We need a mother on the La Grange School Board. Vote for Sara Morgan for Place 3 on April 3.”
Atlan M. Citzler, the chair of the La Grange High School Vocational School advisory committee, announced the third annual Vocational Career Day had been scheduled for Thursday, April 1. More than 100 students were to be organized into small groups to tour participating business firms at scheduled times throughout the day. During those outings, students were to be given pertinent facts regarding the operation of each business as they viewed various departments in operation.
An antique fair and sale was being held in Round Top on Saturday and Sunday, April 3-4, according to Miss Emma Lee Turney, manager of Antiques Productions of Round Top and Houston.
