For the Record on Page A2 & C5 LaBahia Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas presents: The Buzz on Pollination on Friday, Dec. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Nancy Carol Roberts Library in Brenham. Pollination isn’t just a buzzword in the news – it’s a deeply bizarre, fascinating, and essential part of life on this planet. In this talk we’ll explore why flowers exist in the first place, their intricate and sometimes unsettling relationships with animals, what pollinators you can find in your backyard, and why pollination is crucial for human survival. Guest speaker is Kelsey Low, Adult Programs Manager at the Houston Arboretum, where she helps other adults connect to Houston’s urban wilderness through classes on native plants, art, cooking, and bird watching. She has been a bird watcher for nearly 25 years and is particularly fascinated by bird behavior. A committed advocate for nature in the city, she is a Texas Certified Environmental Educator and a member of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Urban Outreach Advisory Committee and the City of Sugar Land PARCS Board.

Old-Time Christmas Caroling
Join for an evening of old-time Christmas caroling on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m. in the old church building on Skull Creek Rd. in Shelby. This annual event is a season favorite. Neighbors, family and friends come together to enjoy singing, delicious refreshments, and celebrate the spirit of the season. This event is hosted by the Shelby Area Historical Society. The silent auction benefits the historical society and is a great opportunity to do some Christmas shopping. Bring a flashlight, a blanket if it’s cold weather, refreshments to share, and invite others to join the fun.
Christmas Season Celebration
St. James Episcopal Church invites all to the annual Lessons and Carols service in celebration of the Christmas season. The program consists of nine gospel readings interspersed with a festive variety of Christmas carols performed by the St. James choir. Handbell Choir Christmas Cantata Sunday, Dec. 14, the Chancel Choir and Glory Tones Handbell Choir of New Life Methodist Church present their Christmas Cantata, “Only a Breath Away.” It is our gift to you at the 9 a.m. service, 1215 N. Von Minden Rd., La Grange. Under the direction of Nancy Hajek and accompanied by Ruby McGuill, the narrator, Rachel Smith, takes on the role of a homeless person (who just might be only a breath away), along with Molly Hudson who retells the Christmas story. Beautiful choral and handbell arrangements from several composers will be woven within the story.
RT Shelby Hermann Sons Christmas The annual Round Top-Shelby Lodge of Hermann Sons Life Christmas Party will be Sunday, Dec. 14, with a meeting starting at 11 a.m. A catered meal will be served at noon. Members may bring desserts. The “Rob Your Neighbor” game will follow lunch, so bring a wrapped gift to put under the tree. Also, a collection of items for CASA will be collected. The County Clerk’s Office is providing this monitoring system to the public at no charge. This service will notify subscribers within 24 hours when a document with their registered name on it has been recorded into the County’s Official Public Records.
