The La Grange Volunteer Fire Department will host its 40th annual benefit fish fry fundraiser on Sunday Oct. 19 at the La Grange Knights of Columbus Hall. Serving will be drive-thru only from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. for a free-will donation. Proceeds from this event will go towards the purchase of new equipment. This event is co-sponsored by the La Grange Knights of Columbus Chromcik Council No. 2574.
Sing on Sunday
Like to sing? The La Grange Church of Christ will host a “Day of Praise” on Sunday Oct. 19, that will conclude with an area-wide singing starting at 5 p.m. Lots of the “old songs” along with a number of new ones, all in the a cappella style. Everyone in the community is invited to join in for the free program.
Refreshments will be served afterwards. The church is located at 646 E. St. Hwy. 71.

There s more For the Record on Page A2 & C4 The City of La Grange has designated Saturday, Oct. 18, as Residential Bulk Curbside Pick-Up Day for the hard to dispose of bulky items. Waste Management will pick up one free load of bulky items on this day. All items should be within three feet of the curb by Friday evening. Trucks will be starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning to pick up items for La Grange Utility Customers. Bulk items include: stoves, refrigerators and air conditioners which have been tagged and certified as being “freon free” by a licensed technician, microwaves, water heaters, washing machines/ dryers, barbeques, mattresses, chairs, recliners, couches and other furniture. The city will also have roll off containers available to residential utility customers for hard to dispose of items. These containers will be located at the City Service Center at 1040 E. Eblin inside the yard and customers will have to show their utility bill receipt to be able to discard their items. These containers will be available Monday-Thursday, Oct. 20-23 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. No tires, batteries, construction debris, paint or chemicals will be accepted. Only one set of mattresses per utility bill will be accepted. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning units must be tagged certifying that the refrigerant has been removed by a certified technician. RT Church Offers Tom Petty Tribute
Saint Cecilia’s Round Top, a creative spiritual community, will present a special Tribute Service celebrating the 75th birthday of Tom Petty, Saturday, Oct. 19 at 10:30 a.m. The service features an all-star group of musicians from Texas, New Orleans, and England including Crispin Schroeder, Ben Jones, Joey Mc-Gee, Stephen Mansolo, Ezra Schroeder, Bobby McDonald, and Rob Kazenel, and a sermon from priest and author William B “Father Bill” Miller titled “I Won’t Back Down!” The service includes Tom Petty classics such as “I Won’t Back Down, Free Falling, Runnin’ Down the Dream, Learning to Fly, My Back Pages, End of the Line, Angel Dream, and Wildflowers.” The service is free and open to the public and will be held in Henkel Square in Round Top. Farm Bureau Meeting
The Swiss Alp/Ammannsville/Dubina Farm Bureau will meet Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the SAFB building on U.S. 77 between La Grange and Schulenburg. The social will begin at 6 p.m. with a pot luck dinner to follow. Precinct 4 Commissioner, Drew Brossman, will talk about current Fayette County activities and concerns. The La Grange Garden Club invites the public to its October meeting featuring Master Gardener Lisa Nicklow, who will present “Bulbs, History, Lore, and Landscaping.” It is guaranteed to enlighten, educate and entertain all green thumbs and also those not so green thumbs. Join on Thursday, Oct. 23. Social time begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by the presentation at 12 noon in the Randolph Recreation Center.
Melcher Program and Book Signing
Marilyn Melcher Maddox will be at the Fayette Public Library Meeting Room at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23 for a program and book signing of her just released biography of her father, Robert Lee Melcher, who grew up in La Grange. A German Texan in World War II includes a transcription of Melcher’s war diary, numerous photographs, and tells of the patriotism and internal struggles faced by a German Texan who fought against his family’s homeland. Use the meeting room entrance toward the rear of the building on Franklin Street.

Congregational Meeting
The Annual Waldeck American Lutheran Church Congregational Meeting has been scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 9. Along with the annual meeting will be the election of one new council member to replace Zach Albers. If you feel you could fulfill this position, please contact one of the current council persons. As a reminder, Reformation Services on Sunday, Oct. 26 will be held with fellow churches, St. Paul-Shelby, Martin Luther Carmine and Bethlehem-Round Top at Lutherhill in the Carby Chapel. Volunteers are needed to take a few necessary items from Waldeck to be used during the service, as well as volunteers for the service. Fayette Public Library Movie Time Fork N’ Film offers a wonderful blend of storytelling magic both on screen and at the table. Join the Fayette Public Library on Friday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. to watch the enchanting stop-motion film Coraline, rated PG, with a duration of 1 hour and 50 minutes. Come along as Coraline Jones explores a magical world through a secret door, and enjoy delicious themed snacks that bring the movie to life. Flag Disposal Drop Off Locations The Texas Heroes Museum located at 171 S. Main in La Grange accepts old flags for proper disposal. The drop-off bin is inside the museum which is open 1-4 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. If leaving flags outside the door when the museum is closed, please have them in a plastic bag or a box so that they are not laying on the ground.
