Writing Group 

A free creative writing group is being offered on Thursday, Oct. 16 and Thursday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fayette Public Library in La Grange. All are welcome (even homeschoolers). Donella Dornwell McLean, author, will be facilitating. Donella Dornwell McLean has a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and English. 

Genealogy 

The Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives is offering a free workshop that includes eight streamed genealogy programs on Friday, Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. You may attend one or all of the sessions which will take place in the meeting room of the Fayette Public Library at 855 S. Mobile Food Truck 

The Central Texas Food Bank mobile food pantry will be at the Waldeck Lutheran Church on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 10-11a.m. Drive-thru only.

Fayette County Republican Women

The public is invited to attend the Fayette County Republican Women General Meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Frisch Auf! Valley Country Club, 575 Country Club Drive in La Grange. Check-in begins at 10:45 a.m. Lunch is available for $20. Program speaker will be Chief Justice Jimmy Blacklock. Chief Justice Blacklock was first appointed to the Supreme Court of Texas in January 2018 by Governor Greg Abbott. Justice Blacklock was elected by the public following his appointment and re-elected in 2024. Governor Abbott then appointed him to serve as the Court’s 28th Chief Justice in January 2025. Before joining the Court, Chief Justice Blacklock served as Governor Abbott’s General Counsel and in the Attorney General’s Office under then-AG Abbott. While at the AG’s Office, he handled appeals and trials of constitutional cases in state and federal court involving matters such as federalism, religious liberty, and the separation of powers. Earlier in his career, Chief Justice Blacklock was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and he worked in private practice in Houston and Austin. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and a J.D. from Yale Law School. Also joining will be Senator Mayes Middleton, candidate for Texas Attorney General. Curbside Bulk Trash Pickup

The City of La Grange has designated Saturday, Oct. 18, as Residential Bulk Curbside Pick-Up Day for the hard to dispose of bulky items. Waste Management will pick up one free load of bulky items on this day. All items should be within three feet of the curb by Friday evening. Trucks will be starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning to pick up items for La Grange Utility Customers. Bulk items include: stoves, refrigerators and air conditioners which have been tagged and certified as being “freon free” by a licensed technician, microwaves, water heaters, washing machines/ dryers, barbeques, mattresses, chairs, recliners, couches and other furniture. The city will also have roll off containers available to residential utility customers for hard to dispose of items. These containers will be located at the City Service Center at 1040 E. Eblin inside the yard and customers will have to show their utility bill receipt to be able to discard their items. These containers will be available Monday-Thursday, Oct. 20-23 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. No tires, batteries, construction debris, paint or chemicals will be accepted. Only one set of mattresses per utility bill will be accepted. Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning units must be tagged certifying that the refrigerant has been removed by a certified technician. 3rd Annual Monster Dash in Schulenburg Turtle Wing Foundation will be hosting their 13th Annual Monster Dash Sunday, Oct. 19 from 5-7 p.m. at Jack & Mary’s located at 610 Lyons Ave. in Schulenburg. The event will consist of the “Boo Around the Block” with plenty of local businesses and organizations handing out candy and hosting games, the Jack Hooper costume contest, a performance by On Pointe Dance Studio, a bake sale, and of course, the Monster Dash. Come out and see if you’re the fastest (or the scariest) in town, it will be spooktacular. The event is free to attend. Martin Luther Lutheran Church

Join Martin Luther Lutheran Church for a day of faith, food, and fellowship at their Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Carmine Hall, 300 N. Bingo in Ledbetter

Bingo for Seniors (60 and older plus guests) will be held at the Ledbetter Community Center on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 2-4 p.m. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. $5/card covers all games with prizes awarded for each game. Chips, snacks and drinks available for free-will donation.

Nassau Cemetery Assoc. Meeting

Nassau Cemetery Association will hold a meeting on Sunday Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Educational Bldg. in Round Top. Sing on Sunday Evening

Like to sing?The La Grange Church of Christ will host a “Day of Praise” on Sunday, Oct. 19, that will conclude with an areawide singing starting at 5 p.m. Lots of the “old songs” along with a number of new ones, all in the a cappella style. Everyone in the community is invited to join in for the free program. Refreshments will be served afterwards. The church is located at 646 E. St. Hwy. 71.

La Grange VFD Annual Fish Fry

The La Grange Volunteer Fire Department will host its 40th annual benefit fish fry fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 19 at the La Grange Knights of Columbus Hall. Serving will be drive-thru only from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. for a free-will donation. Proceeds from this event will go towards the purchase of new equipment. This event is co-sponsored by the La Grange Knights of Columbus Chromcik Council No. 2574.

Farm Bureau Meeting

The Swiss Alp/Ammannsville/Dubina Farm Bureau will meet Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the SAFB building on U.S. 77 between La Grange and Schulenburg. The social will begin at 6 p.m. with a pot luck dinner to follow. Precinct 4 Commissioner, Drew Brossman, will talk about current Fayette County activities and concerns. Members are asked to bring a side, main dish or dessert. Visitors are welcome.

VFW Post 5254 and Auxiliary to Meet Members of the VFW Post 5254 and Auxiliary of La Grange will meet at the VFW Post Home at the La Grange Fairgrounds on Tuesday, Oct. 21. The Auxiliary meets at 5 p.m. and at 6 p.m. the Post and Auxiliary will enjoy a meal, after which the Post meets. District 28 Post and Auxiliary officers will be in attendance. Prospective members are welcome to attend.

Beekeepers Association Meeting

The Fayette County Beekeepers Association (FaycoBeeks) will meet on the first Saturday of every month at the Fayette County Agriculture Building in La Grange, located at 255 Svoboda Ln. For anyone interested in learning about beekeeping, there will be a Beekeeping 101 Honey Bee Biology presentation from 4:30-5:30 p.m. A potluck dinner will follow, please bring your favorite entrée, side or dessert to share. Afterwards, there will be a business meeting, an open discussion on bee-things, and a guest presentation it is also a great opportunity to meet up with experienced beekeepers who can serve as mentors and advisors. Proper Flag Disposal Drop Off Locations The Texas Heroes Museum located at 171 S. Main in La Grange accepts old flags for proper disposal. The drop-off bin is inside the museum which is open 1-4 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. If leaving flags outside the door when the museum is closed, please have them in a plastic bag or a box so that they are not laying on the ground.

Celebrate Recovery at Bridge Church Join Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered program designed to help individuals heal from hurts, habits, and hang-ups, every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the multipurpose building at 3007 Cedar Creek Drive in La Grange. The evening begins with worship and a lesson or testimony in the large group, followed by gender-specific small groups for sharing in a safe, supportive environment.
