Homeschool Co-op
Greater Vision Team School is a Christian homeschool co-op that offers science, history, geography, writing, P.E. and electives to children ages newborn to 8th grade, and science, writing and personal finance for highschool age. The co-op meets every Tuesday at Camp Lutherhill in La Grange for 12 weeks each Fall and Spring semester. Families can join for the academic classes in the morning, the elective classes in the afternoon, or both. The fall welcome meeting will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 4 in the meeting room of the Fayette Public Library, from 5:307:30 p.m. Check them out on Facebook or call Brianne Bernsen at (979) 966-9672 for more information.
Hermann Sons Rutersville will hold their August membership meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5, beginning at 7 p.m. The main meal provided by the lodge will be hamburgers. Please bring your favorite side dish or dessert to share.
St. James BBQ
The St. James Episcopal Men’s Club (Holy Smokers) will hold a BBQ Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. or until sold out, at 156 N. Monroe St. across from H-E-B. A half chicken is $6 and sausage link is $7, drive through only. This BBQ is for the benefit of Hospice Brazos Valley.
There’s more The South Lee County Volunteer Fire Department Barbecue is Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Serbin Picnic Grounds on FM 2239. BBQ begins at 4:30 p.m. Beef and pork BBQ to go at the pit 5-7:30 p.m. Beef and pork BBQ plates served with all the trimmings. All plates and beverages are free will donation. Event times: 3-6 p.m. Silent auction; 3:30-6:30 p.m. The Blue Sunset Band; 5-8:30 p.m. barrel train rides; 6:30 p.m. live auction begins. All proceeds go towards updating fire equipment.
Native Plant Society of Texas Meeting
The Live Oak Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will have their next meeting Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Fayette Public Library located at 855 S. Jefferson in La Grange. Marvelyn Granger, President of the Native Prairie Association of Texas (Fayette Chapter) will be speaking on the importance of native prairies and prairie restoration. The meeting starts at 9 a.m.
Swiss Alp Dance Club
The Swiss Alp Dance Club is having a dance on Sunday, Aug. 9, at the Schulenburg Hall located at 405 West St. in Schulenburg. The band, The Dujka Brothers, will be providing live music from 2-5:30 p.m. The public is always welcome, the doors open at 1 p.m. The hall is well air conditioned.
Bingo in Ledbetter
Bingo for seniors 60 and older plus guests will be held at the Ledbetter Community Center on Sunday, Aug. 9 from 2-4 p.m. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. $5/card covers all games with prizes awarded for each game. Chips/snacks and drinks available for freewill donation. This is a non-profit community event for entertainment. Money collected will be used for purchase of prizes and other expenses.
Brushstrokes of Texas & Beyond
German immigrant artists and the shaping of early Texas art. JT Koenig, resident of both Austin and La Grange, will host an engaging presentation exploring the contributions of German immigrants and their descendants to early Texas art of the 19th Century and early 20th Century, including early artists from Fayette County. Sponsored by the Fayette Heritage Museum &Archives, the program will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 6:30 p.m. In the meeting room of the Fayette Public Library, 855 S Jefferson, La Grange. Please use the after-hours entrance toward the rear of the building on Franklin Street.
Praha Church Picnic
St. Mary’s Church in Praha will host their picnic Saturday, Aug. 15 with Mass beginning at 10 a.m. and Praha stew and fried chicken begins at 11 a.m. Plates are $15 dine in or to go. Enjoy ca ountry store, fish pond, cake walk, and ring toss. Bingo from 2-6 p.m. and an auction at 1 p.m. Music throughout the afternoon from 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Hamburgers available after 4 p.m. The church is located at 821 FM 1925 in Flatonia. Habitat For Humanity ReStore
Fayette County Habitat for Humanity ReStore is open for sales and donation drop-offs every Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at 825 N. Main St. in Schulenburg. The ReStore sells and accepts donations of home goods to support Habitat’s mission. Visit www.fchfh.org/ReStore.
Vietnam Veterans Meeting
Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 870 will meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Ammannsville KJT Hall located in Ammannsville. Food and refreshments will be available after the meeting. Members and prospective members are encouraged to attend.
Fair Plant Exhibit
Bright blooms and lush greenery will be taking the stage at this year’s Fayette County Fair, Labor Day Weekend. The Flower and plant exhibit will bring a vibrant botanical air to the Creative Arts Bldg. All gardening enthusiasts and nature lovers are invited to enter their prize plant(s). The Fair theme is Celebrate America 250. Decorate your pots with red white and blue. The plants and the decorated pots will be judged. There are prizes for youth and adults divisions.
