Railroad Depot Museum Reopens

At a lunchtime meeting on May 1, the Friends of the La Grange Railroad Depot agreed to open the museum every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until the last visitor has left. Staffing slots through the end of the summer were filled, and training for other members was planned.

On Saturday, May 8, Arnold Romberg took the first shift and W. O. Wood staffed the museum in the afternoon. In the morning, staff member Bill Karisch brought a child-sized railroad track and a child’s rail handcart. This equipment will be installed in the freight room to allow small children to experience personally a rail ride.

Around noon, two families from Huntsville visited the depot. The younger children enjoyed the hands-on exhibits in the Depot Museum, including the small wooden train layout, and the typewriter, which was a new experience for them. The garden-size train running around the depot rooms above eye-level got a lot of attention. Some of the older children and younger adults got a personal introduction to Morse code, using the telegraph key setup in the depot office. The group said they would plan to come back in December for Santa Claus’s arrival at the depot on a full-size locomotive.
