‘This is a Pretty Big Screw Up’

It might not be your fault but it’s your responsibility.

That’s the message Mike Wallace, a Frisch Auf! resident sent to the Fayette County Commissioners Court at their regular meeting Thursday.

Wallace informed the officials about the recent interest on social media about the state of a number of houses on the golf course in La Grange – houses that have been sitting empty since Hurricane Harvey flooded them four years ago.

The home owners have been prohibited from doing anything with them, as they await buyouts and eventual demolition of the structures.

“There’s a lot of misinformation and fingers being pointed,” Wallace said. “And a lot of those fingers are being pointed at the commissioner’s court.”

The county has been at the mercy of the General Land Office’s snail’s pace with providing funding for the buyouts and demolition.

The buyout cost of the land and homes is estimated to be $580,333, but that’s not counting demolition costs to return the area to greenspace.

“You might be able to re-direct some of that anger at other governmental entities ... This was a pretty big screw up and it falls on y’all’s plate,” Wallace said.

The speech got the attention of County Judge Joe Weber.

“I want to put that on the next agenda,” Weber said. “To have a discussion and update on where we are on this.”
