Part Time Officers Hired For Round Top Weekends

The Town of Round Top signed an agreement with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office for part-time officers to patrol the town on weekends.

“For the last six or so months, as a trial, Round Top has had a contract with the Sheriff’s Office to patrol town on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 7 to 10 p.m., just to look out for suspicious people and watch speeders, those kinds of things,” said Round Top Mayor Mark Massey.

The Town Council decided to renew that contract for a full year at their meeting on March 11.

“We had a great response from locals, saying they really appreciate seeing the presence in town,” Massey said.

Massey said the officers keep an eye out for traffic violations, suspicious people in town, and they check for unlocked doors at businesses.

“The officers have been very helpful, even with visitors asking directions,” Massey said. “It’s a great community service.”

Massey said the Town pays the Sheriff’s Office $36,000 annually for the service, which he said is much cheaper than if the Town hired and equipped its own police officer.

This development speaks to the rapid growth in the Round Top area, which is home to the massive twiceyearly antiques show. Many of the antiques venues have become full-time businesses that attract visitors to the Town throughout the year.

“We’re having some pretty busy weekends now, and it’s great to have an extra layer of safety and security,” Massey said.
