Parking Plan in Round Top Sparking Some Confusion
The Round Top Town Council meets this Thursday, Nov. 20, and one of the items on the agenda calls for a discussion about new public parking which would be located on what is now the Bethlehem Lutheran Church grounds.
Item 3.7 on the agenda states, “Discussion of establishing new public parking areas on White Street and 3rd Street.”
White St. runs parallel to SH 237 one block to the west and dead-ends at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church grounds. Third Street, however, does not appear on any normal maps. It only exists on paper, in official plat records at the Fayette County Clerk’s Office.
Third Street was laid out as one of the streets in Round Top when the town was platted over a century ago. The street was never actually built. According to Vol. 2 Page 30 of the Fayette County Plat Records, there is a 60 ft. by 198.5 ft. piece of land dedicated to the public as “Third Street.”
Today this “street” lies in a patch of grass in the middle of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church grounds, just north of the church’s Education Building.
A member of the congregation told the Record last week that the Town has not had any discussions with the church about Third Street or public parking.
The Town Council meets at 4 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Round Top Courthouse.
