One patient was flown by medical helicopter following a major crash on SH 159 in the Rutersville area on Saturday, Jan. 3.

The wreck happened around 1 p.m. Texas Department of Public Safety investigated the crash, but a report was not available in time for this publication.

According to witness statements, a car was passing other vehicles heading south on SH 159. A white pickup truck heading north had crested the hill in Rutersville as the car was passing other vehicles. The car and the pickup collided nearly head-on. The car flipped multiple times before coming to rest on the east side of the road.

Fayette County EMS Director Josh Vandever reported that one patient in critical condition was flown from the scene by Washington County EMS Air One. Vandever said the patient’s condition improved while airborne, but he did not know the patient’s status after they got to the hospital.

All other patients involved with the wreck were in stable condition at the scene, Vandever said. Witnesses said the person flown by helicopter was in the car that flipped.

First responders shut down the highway for about an hour during the crash cleanup.
