NVCC Seniors Hear From Fayette County Judge Joe Weber
The Navidad Valley Community Connections (NVCC) members were thrilled to have Fayette County Judge Joe Weber join for the Lunch & Learn series as a speaker. Judge Weber is a very friendly and down to earth person who exudes leadership. He told members a little about his personal life and about being married for over 40 years. We know he doesn’t like cabbage, as we had that on the menu the day he came over. Judge Weber filled us in on the work going on in the county. He was emphatic about protecting our way of life and preserving our “small town” atmosphere as people are moving into rural areas from other parts of the country. He asked that everyone slow down when driving to keep safe. He has also asked county officials to address littering and to get trash picked up from the roadsides.
Judge Weber applauded our efforts at the senior center saying, “We need organizations like this center to continue providing services to our citizens.” He said he was happy that we were operating and pledged his support. Judge Weber asked us to use our common sense and stick to the basic protocols of hand washing and social distancing, too. He admired the work that went into creating a safe place for senior citizens so that they have somewhere they can go to see their friends and neighbors, where they can get first-hand information like he was giving us, and where folks can come to have fun and get out of their house.
Where would our members have to go to be in a room where Judge Joe Weber could address them specifically? Where can they go where they could ask questions directly to our county judge and have him right in front of them? Our members were commenting afterwards about this issue. They were blessed to have this opportunity because they just cannot navigate steps, uneven grounds, and other impediments like these to get to a venue where the Judge might be speaking. At the senior center, these important speakers come to them. They meet our members where they are and we all get to spend some time with our guests and ask the burning questions that are on our minds.
Our next Lunch & Learn Series speaker is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 16, and guest speaker will be Kimberly Roberts with Care Inn of La Grange, to tell us all about the business she works for and what services they provide. The NVCC Center, located
The NVCC Center, located in Wolters Park, will be closed from Monday, Aug. 2 through Monday, Aug. 9. The center will reopen on Tuesday afternoon, from 2-4 p.m. for the Paint Shed program and don’t forget Bingo on Wednesday, Aug. 11. NVCC is pleased to announce Care Inn as another business sponsor from La Grange, a rehabilitation center and assisted living facility. Kimberly Roberts, with Care Inn, has stepped forward and offered to sponsor a Bingo of the week at the senior center. Care Inn will sponsor Bingo on the second week of each month by providing Bingo prizes that week and assist with Bingo games from 12 to 1 p.m.

NVCC is planning to get involved with community partners too, such as Blinn Community College, the Schulenburg Food Pantry, Habitat for Humanity, and Texas Workforce to name a few.
There are changes in the air as NVCC is exploring the Crafty Corner program and seek a new direction. We want to bring in some new ideas and we are still looking for people who like to draw, sketch, and pencil doodle. Can you draw flowers, simple birds, butterflies, clouds, and happy stuff? Come to our center on a Friday for Crafty Corner.
The Let’s Talk Gardening program, scheduled for the last Tuesday of each month, had a small get-together at Cindy Meredith’s Herb Cottage on Tuesday, July 27. We will be discussing options to put on a swap shop type of event soon to trade and barter plant cuttings, garden tools, recipes, and such. The next time this group gets together will be Aug. 31 at 10 a.m.
The Bunco Squad has been re-scheduled. We will meet on Thursday, Aug. 12, and we will get started at 9 a.m. so be ready for some action. We will still have a light lunch provided at 12 noon on this day as well.
