NVCC Hears From Terri Hefner, Elections Administrator

The Senior Center in Schulenburg was rocking the third week in November. The atmosphere in the building was energizing and electrifying, because there was so much to be thankful for, there was so much to do, and there was a lot to look forward to.

The week started on Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Chamber of Commerce’s Craft and Bake Sale that was held at the KC Hall in Schulenburg. NVCC set up a table and met other people, got some good exposure, and distributed information about the daily happenings at the Senior Center.

On Monday, Nov. 15, Terri Hefner, Elections Administrator at the Fayette County Elections Office was the guest speaker at the Senior Center and she was extremely interesting to members, staff and volunteers. In her position as Elections Administrator, she spoke about the Elections Office and what gets done there. This office was created by the Fayette County Commissioner’s Court in 2006 and she is responsible for all federal, state, and county elections. In addition, cities, school districts, and other entities contract with her office to conduct their elections. Her office is responsible for all voting equipment, including testing, maintenance, storage, rental, and transport to voting locations. She also serves as the County Voter Registrar, and supervises all voter registration for the county. The Elections Administrator also serves to accept filing of Campaign Finance, appointment of Campaign Treasurers, and other filings related to campaign finance. Terri gave so much information on voting, what kind of ID to take with you, how you can vote by mail, and things not to do as well. Remember to sign your ballot, or it will not be counted. Don’t put two ballots in one envelope.

NVCC even got some folks registered to vote at the Senior Center.

Afterwards, instead of watching a movie, eight to ten ladies gathered in chairs around the oval table and they made an assembly line to create the 40 goodie bags for the third and fourth grade guests on Wednesday, the St. Rose Singers, from the Catholic School. Wednesday, Nov. 17, was record breaking day at the Center. There were 42 members and volunteers at the Senior Center.

Then third and fourth graders from St. Rose Catholic School came to the Senior Center to provide some entertainment for our elders. One student read a poem, then some more jokes and singing, and then they had to go. They had to go back to school, but they didn’t leave without a little goodie bag that was filled with sweet treats of appreciation for them, and a new pencil. Members love the St. Rose Singers and they come every year, so NVCC has a nice inter-generational moment at the Senior Center.

On Friday, Nov. 19, in conjunction with Your Hometown Pharmacy, NVCC hosted a “first-time event” which was a COVID-19 Booster Shot Clinic at the Senior Center in Schulenburg between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for anyone with shot 1 and shot 2 and no appointment was necessary.

For the month of December, mark your calendars, because NVCC will move the Bunco Game group to the second Monday, so come to the Center on Dec. 9 for a rousing game of Bunco.
