NVCC Hears From Schulenburg Mayor, City Manager
During the periods of time that the Navidad Valley Community Connections Center was closed due to COVID-19 numbers spiking all around us, we realized where we needed to be stronger. We realized that we needed some major improvements in how we operate, and that if we made these positive changes, our organization would be impacted in the best way possible.
We are doing some spring cleaning and we have made some hard decisions. We have rolled up our sleeves at NVCC. As we identify and deal with issues, we are determined to re main on the road that will take the NVCC Center from “good to great.” We have embraced this mindset and we are setting goals to take us there. We want to thank everyone who has continued to support the NVCC Center.
Because of everyone’s generous support, the services we provide at the Center located in Wolters Park are ongoing and continuing to support our elder population. Our average daily attendance in May was 12, which is up from 4 in February, and we are welcoming more people back to the Center.
Jannette and Allen Hoelscher came by and stayed to play Bingo. Everyone was so happy to see them and they said they have been very careful about getting out and about, but they were thankful that we kept calling to check on them and kept updating them about what’s going on at the Center.
On this day of seeing everyone and catching up with folks at the Center, we also celebrated the birthdays of the month for June and we had two birthdays at the Center.
Aileen Kasper and Clinton Ellebracht were celebrating birthdays so a birthday cake was provided.
The Mayor of Schulenburg, Elaine Kocian, and our city manager, Tami Walker, were our lunch & learn series speakers. They joined for lunch and members had a great dialogue with city officials. Mayor Kocian gave a short history of her time in office and Tami gave a short history of her tenure as well. The City Manager updated members on improvements being made around town, such as the water towers getting painted and a new lift station, and how the street department is stretched thin but focused on keeping the parks looking nice. Members appreciated them taking the time to come spend some time with members at the Senior Center and answering their questions.
Make plans to come in for some social interaction, and plan to share a communal meal with us. NVCC does ask for a free will offering to help offset the costs of providing the meal supplies such as the plates, cups, napkins and flatware. Another area where people can help is by providing a dessert once a month. Right now, we are looking for a birthday cake of the month sponsor. This way, we would always have a birthday cake on the third Wednesday of each month and can celebrate birthdays with regularity. Navidad Valley Community Connections is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization with a mission “to provide a multipurpose organization that initiates, sponsors and promotes events, activities, and projects which enhance the quality of life for older adults in Fayette County and the surrounding communities.” NVCC is located next door to the Boys & Girls Club in Wolters Park.
