Numerous Local Schools Deal With Busted Pipes

A number of local school districts suffered busted pipes during last week’s storm, but repair work was quick and classes were set to resume Monday Feb. 22 after all campuses were closed last week.

La Grange

La Grange Independent School District had a number of weather related issues.

There was a water leak in the ceiling at the high school that sent water pouring into floors of the cafeteria and the library.

No books were damaged, but repair work may be required to some carpet and some tiles may pop up because of the water damage, superintendent Bill Wagner said.

The cafeteria will be operational when students return Monday, but the library may be closed for a few days, Wagner said. Water lines also broke in three exterior areas at the high school – at the baseball field, the softball field and the visitor side concession stand of Leopard Stadium.

Fayetteville

One pipe busted in the ceiling above a classroom attached to the old gym at Fayetteville ISD, but did not do extensive damage.

“We’re hoping that’s the extent of the damage,” said Dr. Jeff Harvey, Fayetteville ISD superintendent.

There was a lot of ice on the pavement around campus Friday, which led the decision to cancel classes that day, Harvey said.

RT-C

At Round Top-Carmine ISD, both the elementary campus in Round Top and the secondary campus in Carmine had busted pipes, said RTCISD superintendent Brandon Schovajsa.

The breaks set off the fire alarms so personnel were able to respond very quickly, Schovajsa said.

He said a couple of classrooms will have to be moved around for a few days before things can be repaired.

“We feel very fortunate and thankful for the community and staff. We had a big outpouring of support to get the campus ready for kids to return on Monday,” Schovajsa said.

Schulenburg

The New Gym at Schulenburg ISD flooded after a sprinkler line froze and busted inside the girls restroom. School officials discovered the problem Tuesday morning

Schulenburg ISD Superintendent Duane Limbaugh said the water ran down the gym floor along the visitors side and out the door. Limbaugh said he doubted the floor’s protective wax coating was able to withstand the deluge.

Limbaugh said an insurance adjuster would come to the school on Monday to assess the damages.

Elsewhere on campus, another sprinkler line froze and busted inside the old Home Economics Building, which is now used for art classes.

Limbaugh said both leaks have been plugged and classes would resume at normal hours on Monday, Feb. 22.
