No More ‘First-Dose’ Vaccines Seem Headed Here Any Time Soon

Fayette County residents wanting to get a coronavirus vaccine will have to travel to Brenham to get one, at least for now.

Fayette County Emergency Management Chief Craig Moreau said he know of no more first doses of the vaccine coming to Fayette County. The County received about 1,000 doses during the week after Christmas and quickly distributed them to highpriority individuals such as first responders and medical professionals who come into contact with COVID-19 patients.

Last week the County distributed another 54 first doses to some select medical professionals. Also last week, Governor Greg Abbott rolled out a vaccine mass distribution plan targeted at 28 urban “hubs.” Moreau said most of the state’s vaccine supply will be going to those hubs.

State Senator Lois Kolkhorst lobbied for more vaccines in rural areas, which resulted in an announcement last Thursday about a “sub-hub” to be established at the Washington County Fairgrounds.

After the County ran out of the initial 1,000 vaccines here, St. Mark’s Hospital in La Grange set up a phone line where people could leave a message to get placed on a waiting list for a vaccine. It doesn’t look like those calls will be fulfilled locally for some time. Moreau encouraged everyone who left a message at St. Mark’s to also sign up for a shot at the sub-hub in Brenham.
