New Brenham Shopping Open By End of Year

• Construction of a new shopping center in Brenham is on track to open in the spring. According to Lunden McGill with Baker Katz, work on the new development located on U.S, 290 Frontage Road and Chappell Hill St. is following the timeline the company shared at the groundbreaking ceremony in March. “We are still set to deliver to tenants at the end of this year and the majority of the anchors will be open in the spring,” McGill said.

• A focus group for the City of Giddings met a few weeks ago to discuss applying for a Texas Parks & Wildlife Department grant that would possibly provide $150,000 to help pay for a new Splash Pad. The city recently received a $150,000 check from Texas Disposal Service (TDS) to be put toward paying for about half of a new 5,000 square foot Splash Pad that will cost about $300,000.
• A routine traffic stop turned into a high-speed pursuit as local officers chased a speeding vehicle for about 10 minutes before a peaceful surrender on Saturday, Oct. 9. A Giddings police officer attempted to pull over a black Chevrolet Camaro traveling westbound in the 13000 block of E. Austin St. around 11:56 p.m. The driver did not stop and turned northbound onto FM 141. The driver attempted to outrun the patrol vehicle. The driver maxed out at 110 mph. After further pursuit the driver went to his residence and was boxed in by law enforcement officers. The driver, 21-year-old Marlon Aldael Olvera-Torres of Giddings was arrested and booked into the Lee County Jail for Evading Arrest/ Detention with Vehicle.

• Lee County Precinct 3 Commissioner Alan Turner returned to Commissioners’ Court on Monday following at least two months absence due to his contracting COVID-19. Several weeks of his absence were spent in the hospital on a ventilator and under specialized medical care.
In addition to his return, as Judge Pro-Temp, he led the Court in the absence of Judge Paul E. Fischer, who was out.

• On Sept. 28 around 8:30 p.m., a fire destroyed the historic home at I.V. Duncan Ranch in the Eagle Lake area. The white wooden house nestled in a grouping of trees was likely struck by lightning.
