Neighbor’s Night Out to Resume May 12 in Winchester
After a long hiatus due to COVID-19, Neighbor’s Night Out will begin again on May 12 at the home of Wayne and Ellen Brumback at 401 Piney Grove Lane. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring a potluck dish to share and lawn chair. Please come, meet, and visit with your neighbors. Young at Heart to Meet
Young at Heart will meet again on Tuesday afternoon, May 11 at 2 p.m. at Zilss Hall. Please come and have an afternoon of dominoes or cards with your neighbors. Bring a lunch dish to share with the participants. Drinks will be provided.
WACA 2021 Scholarship
This year the association will offer a $1,000 scholarship to a person enrolled or enrolling in an institute of higher learning for careers in the professions of nursing, teaching, criminology/peace officer, fire sciences, dental, radiology/imaging or EMT certification/paramedic degree. To qualify you must be a resident of Fayette county and enrolled in college or approved program by the fall of 2021 or been enrolled for at least one semester. You must have a GPA of 2.5. Quilt Block Class Scheduled
A Quilt Block Paint class will be held on Saturday, May 15 at 10 a.m. at Zilss Hall in Winchester. Registration is required and can be completed online at www.quiltblocktrail.com. A $65 registration fee may be sent to WACA at 8945 FM 153, Winchester, Texas 78945. The registration fee has been raised due to the higher cost of lumber and paint. If you would prefer to pay with credit card you may contact Rhoda Gersch at (979) 242-3213. The class will be six hours long and you will be able to complete a quilt block. All supplies will be provided. Please wear appropriate clothing that could be stained with paint, also bring a sack lunch and drinks. COVID-19 protocol will be observed.
Round Table Book Club
The Winchester Book Club has selected the book “The Only Woman in the Room” by Marie Benedict for its May review. The book explores the unbelievable life of the woman better known as movie star Hedy Lamarr. However, an invention she patented in 1942 eventually becomes part of the foundation for the modern cell phone. The club will meet on May 18 at 7 p.m. at Zilss Hall. Sherry Murphy will be leading the discussion. Please come and join.
Movie Night at St. Michael’s
The Board of Missions and Board of Education will be hosting a Movie Night at SMLC Park on Saturday, May 22 at 6 p.m., and everyone is welcome. Grab your favorite comfy seating and come join us for a family-friendly movie at the park. Hot dogs and popcorn will be provided, and adults can bring their own beverages. Invite your neighbors and bring friends. Casserole Crew
The Board of Missions of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church would like to start a Casserole Crew, and they are looking for some good cooks to volunteer. They would like to keep 5-10 frozen casseroles and desserts, in assorted sizes, on hand at church so that when someone is in need, we can provide them with a home-cooked meal. This will be a tangible way to show our care for people in the congregation and community when they may be struggling with hunger, facing grief, celebrating a newborn, or just going through a hard time. Barn Board Quilt Trail
Winchester Barn Board Quilt Trail maps can be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange. The trail is self-drive, is available at your convenience and is a great way to spend an afternoon viewing the wildflowers and the beautiful quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road.
Recycling Trailer
The Winchester recycling trailer is located on the side of Zilss Hall on Memorial Hall Street. Please place your recycling in the appropriate bins. We would appreciate that you make sure that you close the bins so that any trash will remain in the bins and not blow. These bins are not for household garbage. Please recycled items only.
Zilss Community Hall
Anyone wishing to rent Zilss Hall should contact (512) 434-0292. The hall is following COVID-19 requirements. Rent is very reasonable.
The Little Free Library
The library is always open and has a variety of authors. Space is limited, so please, if you donate a book(s), look through the current selection and take as many as you leave. The Little Free Library is housed under the roof of the patio at Zilss Hall. There is also a bulletin board available on the patio. If you have an event, you would like advertised, please post.

Condolences
Sympathy is extended to the family of Mary C. Zaiontz, mother of Pastor Patricia Zaiontz-Newcomer, of the Winchester United Methodist Church. Mary Zaiontz died April 24 in San Antonio at the age of 100 years. She is survived by her husband of 72 years and four children.
St. Michael’s Lutheran Church
Continuing for all future worship services unless notified otherwise, St. Michael’s will be changing the format of their worship services as they continue to adapt to COVID-19. The new worship format will allow those who are comfortable returning to worship service in the sanctuary to do so while still making accommodations for those who would prefer to participate from their vehicles in the parking lot. The wearing of a mask or face covering is optional currently for those participating in the sanctuary. Every other pew will be marked off to allow spacing between groups. If you have questions or concerns, please call Pastor Nate at (979) 966-8036. You can continue to attend worship in your car.
First United Methodist
The Winchester First United Methodist Church has returned to service inside the sanctuary. Please wear a mask and social distance inside the church. The Church has services on the first and third Sunday of the month at 8:30 a.m. The Rev. Patricia Zaiontz-Newcomer is the pastor.
Shiloh Baptist Church
