Navidad Valley Community Connections Center to Re-Open
Well, it’s official. Navidad Valley Community Connections (NVCC) Center in Wolter’s Park in Schulenburg will re-open on Monday, Feb. 1. NVCC will start off slow, being open on Mondays and Wednesdays for now, and will start planning on building the daily program with activities and projects to attract folks back to the Center.
There will be a hot, nutritious meal provided on both days that will be packed up for members to take home with them. This is to minimize time being un-masked in the Center. NVCC will start out with soups and stews, and as the numbers increase, the meals will be more substantial.
Meanwhile, NVCC is preparing to move out of the Crafty Corner space at the Gorman building and back into the Center at Wolter’s Park. Tables and chairs at the Center are being rearranged to accommodate the huge amount of supplies this program has accumulated since the beginning. They really made an impact when COVID-19 hit in early 2020 by producing masks for first responders, for employees at nursing homes, for employees at City Hall and for Arlan’s cashiers. Many were sold and the income derived from their efforts helped with some revenue for the Center since fund raisers were unable to be held.

You can also come by Crafty Corner, located inside the Gorman building, as their hours of operation are Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 3 p.m. and on Friday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The older adults who attend the Center feel safe with their masks on and feel even safer when the others around them are masked up too.
I do want to take a moment to recognize the good work that goes on at Wolter’s Park. The City of Schulenburg employees who perform the work there are really proud of how the park looks. They work hard to make sure that the park is safe and presentable for the public to use, and they appreciate the feedback, too. When talking to Phillip, one of the workmen, we mentioned how the drainage was poor right in front of the building because of the low spots and pointed out how the proper drainage area was not doing what it is supposed to do. Several of the senior citizens had mentioned that the puddles keep them from parking close to the front door and this means a longer trek for them, some who use walkers, across unlevel ground.
About a week later, we noticed a huge improvement. The drainage chute had been scraped clean and was free of debris and overgrown weeds. It was awesome. Then some asphalt mix was added to several low spots that were retaining water and this allowed the water to drain like it is supposed to.
The older adults wanted me to make sure and give the City crew a big “thank you” for helping to make a Wolter’s Park safer for them. They said this work really makes a difference in their lives and in the great experience they have of coming to Wolter’s Park and the NVCC Center.
