The Rose mobile mammography bus was at Tejas Health Care in La Grange on Tuesday, Oct. 7, to offer free breast cancer screenings for uninsured women. Tejas Health Care will host another screening event at their clinic in Giddings on Dec. 9.

Kellie Jakobeit, Director of Nursing for Tejas, said Tejas Health Care has partnered with The Rose to offer these screenings since 2018. Looking ahead to early 2026, Tejas plans to host four events a year in conjunction with The Rose Breast Center of Houston to serve both insured and un-insured patients.

Jakobeit said The Rose provides an especially-needed service since there are currently no medical imaging services available in the area. Uninsured patients can make an appointment for the Dec. 9 screening day by picking up an application at either Tejas clinic. Patients will need a doctor’s order. The staff at Tejas can assist with that process. Sometimes, Jakobeit said, uninsured patients are afraid to get screened because they don’t have money to pay for procedures if something is found.

“The great thing about The Rose is if they find something, they’ll follow through with the patient throughout the entire process,” Jakobeit said. “Even for uninsured patients, they’ll find grants to pay for seeing a doctor, getting biopsies, and setting up surgery.”

Insured patients can schedule their own screenings with a doctor’s order, Jakobeit said. The dates for these events in 2026 are pending at this time.
