Man Struck By Train in Schulenburg

A train struck a man on a bicycle in Schulenburg Monday evening, Nov. 3. The man was flown by helicopter to Dell Seton Medical Center in critical condition.

Union Pacific Railroad reported that one of their trains struck an individual crossing the tracks on a bicycle around 6 p.m. The incident happened near the intersection of North Main Street and Bohlmann Ave. The train crew was not injured, a UP spokesperson said.

Schulenburg Police, Fayette County EMS and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office responded. Schulenburg Police Sgt. Rusty Roggenkamp reported the 44-year-old man from Schulenburg suffered a “grazing blow” with the train. He said the crossing arms were down when the collision occurred. Roggenkamp said the man suffered severe head injuries.

EMS Director Josh Vandever said an ambulance crew provided stabilizing care at the scene. A medical helicopter from Washington County EMS transported the man to Dell Seton. Several railroad crossings in town remained closed until around 7:20 p.m. while the train was stopped. The man remained hospitalized as of Wednesday afternoon.
