Man Hospitalized After Shooting Himself in Groin

A La Grange man accidentally shot himself in the groin Saturday, Aug. 22.

La Grange Police and Fayette County EMS got the call from a residence on E. Camp St. shortly after 8 p.m. Police Chief David Gilbreath said they found a 49-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his groin.

Gilbreath said the man was taking a handgun out of his vehicle and attempted to holster it in his waistband when the pistol discharged. Gilbreath said officers did not determine how the gun fired. The pistol was a .380 caliber Ruger LCP, Gilbreath said.

Fayette County EMS transported the man to the helipad in Smithville, where they loaded him onto a medical helicopter from Washington County EMS. The man was then flown to Austin for hospital treatment. Fayette County EMS Director Josh Vandever said the man is expected to recover.
