Man Arrested for Stabbing in Schulenburg

Schulenburg Police arrested a local man last Wednesday for stabbing another individual that day.

The stabbing happened around noon on March 31, according to a report from Schulenburg Police Chief Troy Brenek. Brenek said the victim called police to report the stabbing. Officer Devan Taylor responded to the scene at 201 Summit Street (US Hwy. 90), located about two blocks east of US 77.

Taylor found the 30-year-old male victim who had been stabbed in the chest. The suspect was not at the scene. The victim, a resident of Schulenburg, said he was walking down the street when the suspect offered him a ride. The victim said he sat in the passenger seat and then the suspect stabbed him in the chest. The victim got out of the car and the suspect drove away.

Brenek said the victim gave a description of the suspect and the vehicle to Taylor and Sgt. Tobey McFadden, who arrived to assist. Officers broadcast the description of the vehicle over police radio. Officers began searching for the suspect around town. About an hour later, Brenek said, Sgt. Randy Thumann and deputies David Smith and Herman Olvera of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle driving westbound on Interstate 10 towards Flatonia.

The deputies pulled over the vehicle and detained the driver, identified as 21-year-old Spencer Tyrone Montgomery of Schulenburg.

Brenek said Montgomery confessed to stabbing the victim and claimed it was self-defense.

“He didn’t tell us why it occurred, but he claimed it was self-defense,” Brenek said. “We’re still investigating. We are trying to figure out why it happened.”

Fayette County EMS transported the victim to Columbus Community Hospital. Fayette County EMS Director Josh Vandever said the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening and that he was treated and released the same day.
