A Warrenton man accidentally shot himself last Friday, April 9. The injuries were not life-threatening, according to a report from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.

A call reporting a gunshot victim on SH 237 in Warrenton came into the County’s 911 call center 10 a.m. last Friday. Lt. David Beyer of the Sheriff’s Office said deputies did not initially know whether the shooting was accidental or intentional. Fayette County EMS and numerous law enforcement personnel rushed to the reported location, in front of the Campbell’s Building in the center of Warrenton.

Upon arrival, they found a local man in his mid-20s suffering from gunshot wounds in his hand and leg. Beyer said the victim reported that he was handling a pistol when it accidentally discharged. A single shot caused both wounds, Beyer said.

Beyer said the incident took place at the man’s home a short distance north of Warrenton. He said the man could not find his cell phone to call 911 after he was wounded, so he drove himself to Warrenton. He pulled over at the Campbell’s Building and asked a person he found there to call 911.

Fayette County EMS transported the victim to Dell Seton Hospital in Austin for treatment.

Beyer said investigators believe the shooting was accidental.
