Local House Fire Still Under Investigation

A home on FM 2981 burned in the early hours of Thursday morning, Feb. 18.

La Grange Volunteer Fire Department got the call and responded around 1 a.m. The house was located about a mile from the intersection of FM 2981 and SH 159. Fire Chief Frank Menefee quickly called for assistance from Round Top-Warrenton VFD and Fayetteville VFD. Deputies Ben Wilson, Rick Martell and Seth Nagel with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office also arrived.

The occupants were out of the home when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters from the three departments worked in freezing temperature to put out the fire. They left the scene around 5 a.m. Friday afternoon, Feb. 19, a neighbor reported that the fire reignited. La Grange and Round Top-Warrenton VFDs responded once more and put out the flare-ups. The fire was initially reported as having started from a wood stove. Menefee said the cause was unclear and that the fire remains under investigation.
