Local Business Owner Dies in Accident

La Grange Subway owner Tom Hudson died in a deer stand accident on his property near Winchester Monday afternoon, Sept. 13. He was a week shy of his 61st birthday.

Fire Chief Eddie Schneider of the Winchester Area Volunteer Fire Department said his department received a call about the accident around 7:22 p.m. Upon arrival, Schneider said they found Hudson deceased under a large deer stand that fell over on top of him.

“I understand he was in the process of relocating the stand when it happened,” Schneider said.

Hudson was alone when the accident happened. A family member called 911 after discovering the body. Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Kyle Hartmann performed the inquest and ruled it an accidental death.

Hudson and his wife Robin also own the Subway stores in Giddings and Smithville in addition to the one in La Grange. He was a familiar face at local public meetings, especially those of the La Grange City Council and Fayette County Commissioners Court. He often spoke at those meetings as an advocate for property owners, taxpayers and private enterprise.

In addition, Hudson enjoyed racing motorcycles and was wellknown in the motocross community around this area.

Funeral services were scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, at River Valley Christian Fellowship Church in Bastrop.
