On Wednesday, Nov. 19, a group of Middle School students got a taste of what it’s like to be a teacher. The LMS Student Council “Leader in Me” Committee built a lesson based on Habit 3: Put First Things First. This comes from the Leader in Me program by Franklin Covey.

The committee, led by 8th grade Student Council officers Allie Hutchins and Avery Gabriel, met multiple times to create a lesson that would be engaging and meaningful to students. Avery Gabriel said, “It was a great teaching experience. It gives you a good feel for what teaching is really like and it also helps out your teachers. It gave them a break from having to prepare the lesson themselves.” They assigned each member of the committee to a homeroom and those students met with their assigned teacher in advance to be sure everything was ready. In making final preparations, students like 7th grader Charli Hadaway got a real feel for the unknowns faced by teachers when preparing a new lesson. She asked StuCo Advisor, Rebecca Stewart, “What happens if no one raises their hand? What if the game we prepared doesn’t work? What if they don’t pay attention?”

Stewart responded, “Welcome to teaching.”

On Wednesday, when it was time for the lesson, each student teacher greeted their students at the door. They gave students time to consider what their “big rocks”, or things they should prioritize each day, should be. They also went through scenarios where students could really consider what things should be prioritized in a real life situation. 7th grader Skarlet Schielack asked her class, “What would you do if you got invited to a party, but you promised you’d babysit your younger siblings? Or if you wanted to go to the football game, but you have a big project due?”

The experience gave great insight for some students on what it’s like to be a teacher.

“It was really fun teaching,” Avery Gabriel said. “It gave me the chance to connect with the students in a different way, and gave me a great perspective on what it’s like to teach.”

The teachers gave glowing feedback. Mrs. Deanna Hoelscher said, “Emmry Blaschke was prepared and did an excellent job. She would be a good example of how to do this right. So proud of her.”

Students will continue to lead these lessons once a month for the remainder of the school year.
