LL Cookers Win Grand Champion at Winchester Cook Off
The Winchester BBQ Cook Off was held this past weekend with a large crowd of pit masters. First Place Bloody Mary’s-All Sauced Up; First Place Beans-Safety Third; First Place Open-Saucy Racks; First Place Chicken-All Sauced Up; First Place Ribs-LLCookers; and First Place Brisket-Rodea BBQ Cookers. LL Cookers, Lloyd Moreland and Loren Bertsch, walked away with the Grand Champion Award.
BBQ Pork Steak Dinner
There will be a drive thru pork steak dinner on Oct. 17. It will be held at Saint Michael’s Lutheran Church Park in Winchester. Serving will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tickets will be available at church office, (979) 242-3444, or call Mirlyn Griffin at (979) 966-8912. Tickets are $12 each. All proceeds will benefit Missionaries supported by Saint Michael’s.
Quilt Block Paint Class
The next scheduled Quilt Block Paint class, that has openings in registration, is Saturday, Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. at Zilss Hall in Winchester. The class is 6 hours, and a 2 x 2 quilt block will be completed. You may register at www. quiltblocktrail.com and use a credit card to pay the registration fee by calling Rhoda Gersch at (979) 242-3213. The only thing you need to bring to class is a sack lunch; all other supplies are provided.
Book Club
The club selected books for the upcoming months and announces this list of books. October – “Anxious People” by Fredrick Backman; November – “The Sweetness of Water” by Nathan Harris; there will be no meeting in December but two books will be discussed in January – “The Grapes of Wrath” – John Steinbeck and “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah; February – “The Last Thing He Told Me” by Laura Dave; March – “One for the Blackbird, One for the Crow” by Olivia Hawker; April – “The Book of Longings” by Sue Monk Kidd; May – “The Power of One” by Bryce Courtenay; and June – “The Nightwatchman” – by Louise Erdrich. Please come join us.
Barn Board Quilt Trail
Drive out to Winchester pick up a map at Murphy’s or Zilss Hall and enjoy viewing the 65 quilt blocks displayed in our area. The trail is self-drive, available at your convenience, and is a great way to spend a hot afternoon viewing quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road. Winchester Barn Board Quilt Trail maps can be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange.
Recycling Trailer
The Winchester recycling trailer is located on the side of Zilss Hall on Memorial Hall Street. Please place your recycling in the appropriate bins. We would appreciate that you make sure that you close the bins so that any trash will remain in thebins and not blow.
Zilss Community Hall
Anyone wishing to rent Zilss Hall should contact (512) 434-0292. The hall is following COVID-19 requirements. Rent is very reasonable.
The Little Free Library
The library is always open and has a variety of authors. Space is limited, so please, if you donate a book(s), look through the current selection and take as many as you leave. The Little Free Library is housed under the roof of the patio at Zilss Hall. There is also a bulletin board available on the patio. If you have an event, you would like advertised, please post.

First United Methodist
The Winchester First United Methodist Church has returned to service inside the sanctuary. Please wear a mask and social distance inside the church. The Church has services on the first and third Sunday of the month at 8:30 a.m. The Rev. Patricia Zaiontz-Newcomer is the pastor.

St. Michael’s Lutheran Church
The weekly worship service takes place at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning in the sanctuary. Following the worship service, you may gather in the Education Building for Bible Study and Sunday School beginning at 10:15 a.m. You are welcome to visit for worship and Bible Study. When you come to the church, please introduce yourself to Pastor Nate, he will be thrilled to get to meet you.
